Tim Dorr Veteran Posted April 13, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted April 13, 2004 iBook G3 900Mhz. I might actully upgrade that to a PowerBook G4 first. Oddly enough, that PB would have the same specs as this eMac (literally), but cost me $1900.
oik
knight: this is an emac. do you understand what the "e" stands for? based on your posts, i'm guessing "no". it stands for education. these machines are not built for gaming, they are built for students and people who are interested in trying a mac. i mean, even as one of the last generation laptops, a $700 g3 ibook can still hold it's own doing things like writing a paper, looking up information on the internet, checking email, using ichat to talk to friends, editing pictures, and listening to music. yes, the g4 is old technology, but it will likely be around for a few more years. if ibm keeps working on their g3 (what is it, the 750 or something?) and add altivec, hey! new g4. so if ibm fixes the problem with the bus and bumps up the clock speed, the g4 will remain a nice contender. not as nice as the g5 (be it 970, 970fx, 975, or hell, maybe even 976 at that time), but for a relatively cheap computer, it's fine. 256mb ram? that's not as bad as you're making it sound. i use a 500mhz ibook with 256mb ram, and i can use safari, ichat, mail, itunes, and iphoto and still have at least 25mb free ram. don't be afraid of osx because of it's massive caching of items in ram. the hard drive is the slowest part of most computers nowadays, apple saw that and decided to cache as much as possible to prevent hard drive accesses. besides, you have ram, it's not going to burst into flames just because it's getting full. ati 9200? once again, education. besides, if you are going to whine about the gpu's in the mac because they aren't good enough for your games, get away from the mac platform altogether. besides, what's wrong with the 9200? it is certainly capable enough to run osx. hard drive? 40gb. what are you complaining about? i have an 80gb, and i don't even use 15gb. once, again, education. this is about price, not speed. what does dell offer? their $800 computer (regular price, not the 10% off sale price) only has 128mb ram and a 40gb hard drive and integrated graphics, and a regular cd-rom drive. hell, even the emac comes with a cd-rw. so maybe you don't like the emac, but timdorr is right. it's cheap, it offers better features than dell (dell, for crying out loud), and i think overall, you're trying to compare an emac to pc's and the g5 for no good reason at all. You can get a dell for the same price, with the same features, and Win XP Pro. I'm sure it's good for schools, but anything beyond high school I couldn't see a use for it. Timan Veteran Posted April 13, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 13, 2004 Does anyone that has an emac confirm that the screen kinda has a mirror effect? Because I saw a few posts @ spymac about the glass over the screen is kinda far away from the actual screen. :s

I'm sure if that had happened, Apple would have sorted it a long time ago.
icyorange
That's a pretty good price now for the new eMacs... I was going to get one a few months back but went for an iBook G4 800 instead as I wanted the portability, but if I were in the market for a new Mac i'd definitely consider one of these on my poor student budget! :) Nick
oik
that's amazing. because i just looked at dell's website, and looked at their $800 computer, and it had exactly what i mentioned. and i missed one thing. the dell comes with a 15" lcd. the emac comes with a 17" crt. so when we take off the 10% discount and rebates (as i mentioned in my post), well looky, $799. you show me this magical dell you see that has the same price with the same features, and i'll look into it. until then, all i hear you saying is "b...b...but it runs windows xp pro"

I only mentioned it had Windows XP Pro because if you only needed home, it's another $70 cheaper. If you don't want to listen, then fine, go buy a Mac, they look cute

If you don't want to listen, then fine, go buy a Mac, they look cute  I don't think you priced it right. Here's what I got: -2.6Ghz Celeron (cheapest processor with the closest performance) -XP Pro (because Home doesn't compare the OSX) -256MB of RAM (shared) -40GB drive -48x CD-RW / DVD-ROM Combo Drive -17 in (16.0 in v.i.s., .27dp)E773c Monitor -Integrated Intel? 3D Extreme Graphics (Can't really compare this to the 9200 Pro, but it's not ungradable either...) -Dell? Optical USB Mouse (The eMac comes with an optical) -IEEE 1394 Adapter (eMac's got firewire too) Total: $848 ($745 on sale, but that's not stock price) So, for $49 more you get a worse off video card, a machine that's separated into two pieces (actually 4 if you count the speakers), and has tons of built-in ads on the desktop when you first start it up and in the box. Whereas with the Mac, you get an all-in-one machine that's simple to set up, has a clean desktop when you boot (1 icon on the desktop, not 20 including AOL ads), comes with more apps and ones that are actually *useful* (that Dell comes with, at best WordPerfect and Quicken, unless you shell out for Office). Honestly, I don't understand why you're knocking it when it has a) better setup, b) better software, and c) better components...
oik
[whiny voice]but timmm... it's a mac. even if it's a better computer overall, and a better value than dell, i just can't accept the fact that a mac wins. boo hoo[/whiny voice] deal with it threetonesun. this has nothing to do with the fact that the emac 'looks cute' or what somebody wants to use. the emac is a better value, plain and simple. your fud does not work against common sense. go away. XP Pro is debatable, unless it's on a network, most students wouldn't need it (regardless of how it compares to OSX). I'm not knocking it, but the fact is in both cases you're getting a machine which is, at best, useful for general office, e-mail + internet, when for much less you could pick up an old system and do the exact same thing. All I was saying was I'd be impressed if someone put out a sub $800 system that was decent for anything over the basic. I mean marketing these as new and cheap isn't really saying anything besides you can finally get a cheap mac, is it? deal with it threetonesun. this has nothing to do with the fact that the emac 'looks cute' or what somebody wants to use. the emac is a better value, plain and simple. your fud does not work against common sense. go away. I think it does, actually, Apple wouldn't be putting out cheaper eMacs if they didn't realize that they actual need to compete on the low end. If I had to chose between this and the Dell, I probably would take this. If I needed a computer to do what this one does, I wouldn't buy either of them. Max Veteran Posted April 14, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 14, 2004 The UK prices for the new eMac have been updated, along with the student discounts. SuperDrive - ?621.50 Combo - ?494.68 For the normal students/educational centers: SuperDrive - ?656.83 Combo - ?515.83 If you want the Apple NUS store (cheaper than the normal educational) type in a Google search for "Apple NUS". aristotle-dude
Anyone who would suggest using XP Home should be shot. XP Home has crippled networking. It is even more crippled than Windows 98 for godness sake. You cannot compare OS X to XP Home. XP Home is XP Lite really. It is missing several key features like Domain network support, Remote Desktop and encryption.
