help me decide price for ibook

Recommended Posts

OK here is the deal .

I want a portable thing to experience MAC / Panther , surf , and run yellowdog linux.

Here are the SPECS:-

iBook Special Edition Graphite

366MHz/20GB HD (rare)/ 320MB RAM

12.1" TFT Display

24x CD-ROM Drive

Everything very good condition.

Comes with a fresh install of Panther, can leave most apps on there (so you can try, then buy legally) like photoshop, flash MX, dreamweaver MX, Pixels 3D, Strata Pro 3D, Quicktime Pro 6, and tons more. Runs Panther very quickly (partially in thanks to a rare upgraded Hard Drive.)

Will include nice Kensington Carrying Case, and a pack of OWC screen wipes for free. battery included , Includes a brand new AC power adapter (runs great on the AC).

remember. this will be shipped me from USA to india .. the seller is paying 50 USD and me paying 100USD for the fedex.

i think the total deal can be around 400-500 USD .. what do u think?

a laptop is not a laptop unless the battery works since you have to be tethered to the wall for power why not just get like a older g4 im pretty sure they can be had for roughly the same price, or even have someone ship you a refurb emac apple store has them for $529

thetman , thats what i was feeling .... i told the seller about this .. and he has agreed to fix that thing first ... or install another battery in it at the same price ... but still the price is not decided.

Are you sure it will run smoothly? That G3 processor looks like it will hardly make it and i think you would not get full Quartz acceleration ( if any ) with that laptop spec too

OK , correct me if i am wrong .. is this scenario like installing WindowsXP on celeron 300 + 256MB ram? ..

what i am saying is .. i dont want to run PANTHER in fullblown smoothish way .. if it show whats panther is .. and if i can just surf practise unix things and just that i will be happy.

my main purpose is to experience MAC platform and run yellowdog linux on it and all this on a laptop . so no emac or other mac .. want only ibook.

Just warning you that it will be pretty sluggish. A lot of the speed of OS X comes from the G4 Velocity Engine and the Quartz acceleration. The graphical eyecandy GUI of OS X is a pretty nice experience :D

OS X is a pretty good "Unix" distributuon already and it will probably do what Yellowdog can do and more. I guess you are already very good at compiling code

[Price]

For the hardware only : probably not very good ( a bit of a eyecandy freak myself )

You might be able to find some good deals for a G4 ibook on ebay

But with full licensed software CDs : sounds pretty good

i am ebay for the past two days .. all G4 deal end around 1200USD .. the spec range from 700MHZ , - 900Mhz . 30GB-40GB 256-512 RAM.

if i wanna spend 1000USD .. i might hav gone for a ibm thinkpad p3 or celeron one.

That's not a good deal, that iBook will not be good for running panther. The chip is a G3, the graphics card can't handle Quartz Extreme and the display is 800 x 600. (N)

LOL .. kinda like when i click expose it will reboot. i get it .

if we leave the whole panther hoopla .. then how does it look? the seller is saying again and again .. that panther is running there..

I will run, MAC os will only for timepassing. .. the main purpose will be running linux wherever i go .. and roam and look good :p

now i am thinking .. better get a cheap thinkpad then .... if u all think its not a good way to experience MAC.

Well, it won't give you a good impression. Same way that a P100 laptop with 64MB of RAM won't give you a good impression of WindowsXP. Why spend $500 when for just $200 more you can get an iBook 800Mhz refurbished (not secondhand, but not firsthand. sort of 1.25hand). Or $300 more and you can get an eMac with a 1.25Ghz G4 that will run it at "today's" speeds.
