sony vaio should make a linux distro

Recommended Posts

sony vaio or some other computer companies like HP, Dell, and Gateway should build their own polished distributions of linux with their own gui's. with all the money they could make sweet user friendly gui's.

i guess i mean, why don't they?

they could make high quality user friendly GUI's with the tons of money they have. i have already seen sony software that utilizes 3d hardware for a sony photo application, why not utilize 3d hardware for a linux gui. i'd use linux if it had features and vector graphics like longhorn + friendliness of os x.

i know its not important productive-wise, but i don't see any linux distros with beautiful smooth gui's. i think any company would jump at the chance to create and sell a high quality linux distro with a hardware accelerated vector graphics.

...as I believe people would be willing to pay for attractive gui's. that way they could sell a linux pc with much better graphics and functionality than a window's PC for the same price yet with a prettier desktop and more control over what the user sees onscreen. because the linux kernal is free so people are paying for just the gui + some apps kind like the iApps in os x

i think that sony would be the most likely to do something like this as they are in competition with both apple (music) and microsoft (PS2). IBM makes its own linux distros though, dont they? but i know they are not user friendly. however, why would youwant a computer that isnt 'standard' and sony woud lose a lot of money developing htis and it would show in their prices. they will end up like apple, and they dont want that.

Sony is part of the Consumer Electronics Linux Forum (CELF) that promotes and uses (or plans to use) Embedded Linux in various electronic devices. So, they already promote and sponsor Linux.

However, the desktop PC world is different. People often alreay have libraries of software that runs on Windows. Sony, as a corporation will supply what the paying customers demand.

People who think that Linux is a "free beer" thing (and get everything for free) don't help a corporation's 'bottom line'. They take without giving back, and business don't see money in that, because there is no money in that.

For this reason, it will take longer for the consumer PCs to start including Linux as an option. There are a few (VERY few) out there already, but as long as many people have the "free beer" mentality, there is no motivation for business to offer Linux.

linux is profitable just look at redhat. as for making their own 'gui' etc etc there is no need, there are tons of them out there they would just be reinventing the wheel

Sony is fireing 20.000 employees worldwide, I don't think they are gonna put their money in a risky, non-profitable, project like this.

I dont they will have to hundreds of peeps schmoove, if they find good people , they will only need a bumch of them , some very popular distros are only mainted by a 5-6 peeps.

i totally agree with rocks1985 ; all Manufactures should makes their own distro chisled and perfected for their model hardware , the GUI improvement will make it more juicer.

Hope they get it .

The thing is that Sony is reorganizing the whole corporation. For example all funds for research on CRT displays are cut off and go to LCD/TFT research. I highly doubt that Sony will just grab some of their employees and put them on a project to make the Linux desktop pretty..... especially when they fire 20.000 people (among these are lots of PhDs, MScs... etc, people with degrees). Anything that Sony is gonna do right now has to generate money, this wouldn't really generate much... if any.

I work at Sony so I know what is going on. Sony isn't the big rich company that can spend money like there is no tomorrow. Maybe people think that, but it is far from the truth. They ain't Microsoft.....

look at this m$ dailys and dailys longhorn and sony make a better os all round then makes there own kernel then its no longeer linux we dont want that do we? if they do they shouldnt get anyone which worked with m$ at any point of time and real programers. i think if they pay the Linux team, Linus.... $US20,000,000 a year they would werk and we will have sony os and it would be better than windows in 20 years time.........

Except that no one can take the existing Linux kernel, or GNU OS or any other GPL-licensed software and "make it their own". They would violate the license and be accountable under law.

If they did come out with some modifications and enhancements, it must be contributed freely back to the community. (technically, they can make changes and not re-contribute, but only if the changes are for internal use only. If they distribute or sell it, they must also freely provide the source code under GPL.)

The other reason Sony may not want to do a Linux box is that if you look around at their other electronics (digital cameras, MD, digital video cameras, Clie, etc etc), they tend to all have Windows drivers (where connection allows).

Could you imagine how much time and research Sony would have to give to come up with Linux drivers for all those gadgets?

They make a copy for their PS2 (The HDD+Nic+Linux CD) so why not make a distro for their machines. I for one would be more tempted to buy a sony as my next laptop if i had the option of a copy of linux that had 100% hardware support! Even if i had to pay for it!
