aristotle-dude
CEO of Real Networks Rob Glaser emailed Steve Jobs, imploring him to open up Apple's AAC Digital Rights Management System - FairPlay - to Real. http://www.nytimes.com/2004/04/15/business/media/15real.html

session
Real should just stop whining and start making some real products. Isn't it enough that they sued Microsoft! What a ----ing baby Edit: and I don't think making media player (and expecting people to pay for such crap) will get them anywhere  Edited April 15, 2004 by session
oik
well, if apple helps real, apple sells more ipods and may be able to defend their position when ms tries to use it's monopoly power to force people to use wma. do i like hp? no, but by selling hPod's, apple wins. do i like real? no, but by selling iPod's (and fighting ms), apple wins. John Veteran Posted April 16, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 16, 2004 Let them beg. Have them publish a video online of the top 100 execs getting on their hands and knees, begging Apple (or anyone for that matter) to save them. Then someone might help them, just out of pity. Until then, Real deserves to go banckrupt.
tanshu
According to the email leaked by Apple, it was more like threatening them than actually begging. Considering that Real is not in a position to do that, that was really dumb. Also, according to CNet, they not only create a PR nighmare for Real, they might have also hurt their case against Microsoft by threatening Apple that they might form an alliance with MS. John Veteran Posted April 16, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 16, 2004 how much? smart guy. and for what reason?edit: I despise real by the way :shifty: Real claimed that it's losing customers because Microsoft includes WMP with Windows, so people don't download RealOne. Honestly, come on... If a file needs RealOne, and one wants to view it, he/she will install RealOne and watch the file, end of story. Real has a groundless argument from my perspective... "oh, we can't remove it from the operating system" princeton professor comes into court, shows how it can be removed. ms turns around and releases an 'update' that makes it impossible to remove msie. so what was the default browser on your computer when you first turned it on? i don't hate ms, but if you ignore the fact that ms has used it's monopoly to push themselves into people's lives, you're a moron. it has nothing to do with what is "in", it's common sense. do you have any? Chad
I really think Apple is shooting themselves in the foot by not opening up. History is repeating itself. Apple has a HUGE lead on the competition....Apple gets a big head...Apple gets complacent...Apple puts out one or two bad machines/makes a couple dumb moves...Apple loses marketshare handoverfoot. We saw it with the personal computers, and if Apple keeps the big head and the closed system, it may just happen again. As of right now, the iPod is really the only thing that Apple is making serious bank on right now. You all saw it...46 million in profits for the quarter. Without the iPod, that's pretty much gone. Whether it's Real or Dell or Sony...I say if a big company comes begging for your product, you let them use it...course if you're as desparate as Real is, you take them to the cleaners on the deal...but you let them in nonetheless
