Linspire isn't bad for people who don't want to tinker with the "Linux" side of things...

The free download can be used with CNR for 15 days to get all the current stuff. Then drop it and it cost you nothing. And $5 a month for CNR isn't bad for people who just want to click and have current updates. The $15 thing is just to get you the commercial stuff like StarOffice instead of OpenOffice, and things like that.

I checked them out when they first came out with the free Lindows 4.5, and it worked as advertised. However, my 9 year old son is now running Fedora, as *I* feel more comfortable with Fedora over Lindows.

Me got an idea i can sell Linspire over ebay.com.au for about $15 seeing fedora is about $10 in aus

Sorry, you cannot legally do that...

Linspire, Xandros, Lycoris, SuSE (boxed set), and RedHat (Workstation, Enterprise, etc.) cannot be copied and sold.

SuSE and RedHat have free versions (SuSE=FTP and RH=RHL 9 and lower, or Fedora), but the other items may have things that make them "non-free". Things like MP3 playing require licensing (under non GPL terms) to a third party who holds the patent. This cannot be copied, as their licensing terms do not permit freely distributing their code.

So, Fedora, Slack, Mandrake, Gentoo, Debian, and many (MANY) others can be freely copied and redistributed, but those others listed above cannot.

(The fact that Linspire had a 'giveaway' does authorize anyone to copy and redistribute multiple copies. They gave away one 'license' to each person who signed up. That license does allow use on multiple computers in your home, but not beyond that point.)

Downloaded it, stuck it on my laptop. Its and okay idea, just the C-N-R thing is damn annoying. Now waiting foe Gentoo to compile!

I agree. The only reason i end up going back to XP on my laptop is because the hardware support is still sketchy. If i could get something like Fedora 1 to support everything i would stick with it.

When i tried lindows, granted a couple of new things worked, but despite their claims of centrino support, the damn thing didnt want to know and permanently stayed at 1300Mhz.

A co-worker of mine uses Lindows/Linspire. He likes it a lot. He tried Fedora, but didn't like the setup; he just wants his PC to work and not have to worry about viruses.
