use partition magic, free up to 4GB (if you're planning full installation), then go into the setup again and this time do manual partitioning using disk druid. create a /boot and / from the new partition.

What error do you get in windows?

That's really strange, I see you have selected 'Use free space' so I can't understand why it has affected your Windows partition at all. I hate to say this but perhaps there is a problem with your disk?

Do you already have four used primary partitions? If so then you have a small problem.

To get more than four, one partition has to be a 'comtainer partition' that conains secondary partitions. This is due to the inistial design constraints by (I believe) IBM.

I think Dan is onto the problem. BIOS has restrictions on how it accesses the hard drives.

Can you post what your partitioning looks like (Windows & Linux)?

Guessing that the windows Problem is with xp .. to Install the driver, on boot hit F8 and select the option that allows Vga Mode, that will let ya into windows, install ya driver as normal and then reboot, should then allow ya to get back into windows with ya graphics card working and installed, had this problem a few times with Ati cards, just make sure ya select the correct driver for it otherwise it has a habbit of freezing Windows, if freezing occurs go back into Vga mode and play around with which Driver is installed

Hope that helps the Windows side, no idea on Linux

IDE HD's allow only a max of 4 primary partitions. If linux has trouble creating / it's because your hd's are already using the maximum allowed primary partition limit. try reducing your primary partitions using extended ones for instance. This is just a probable cause, no guarantees to it being your solution. As for the windows problem, it has nothing to do with linux. just take it out and put it again in :) it just might work.

it's the test...

when i hit f8 it just lets me change the boot order...

And I'm not seeing anywheere in the bios that will let me change it...

bahh this sucks

I don't actually know what could have gone wrong with your Windows,

but IF you're using Windows XP, maybe you could try System Restore (if it's enabled).

For that Linux problem,

if you need to change your partition table, I can always recommend Powerquest Partition Magic.

EDIT:

you could also take a look at the add/remove options at the control panel.

if the driver of your videocard is there, you can try to uninstall it.

then reboot and try a clean installation.

(just a suggestion)
