Apple Machine For Gaming?

Recommended Posts

 perhaps that is because you have no idea what you're talking about?

since apple store links aren't 'postable', here are some titles that most people are interested in:

Age of Empires II

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn

BloodRayne

Civilization III

Command and Conquer Generals

Ghost Recon: Desert Siege

James Bond Night Fire

Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast

Lord Of The Rings - The Return of the King

Max Payne

Medal of Honor Deluxe Edition

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4

Unreal Tournament 2004

WarCraft III

X-Plane

and that's just from the action games category. and that's a summary, not every game listed by apple. and then you have those other games, like snood or whatever. and then you have simcity 4 and the sims + every expansion pack i've ever heard of.

*if any of those games are from like 1999, don't hurt me. i'm not a big gamer and just posted the ones that i've heard of at one time or another.

yep those games are old. as much as you love Apple, you just have to admit Apple is not an ideal gaming machine.

If budget is no problem then buy yourself a Dual 2Ghz G5 with a 23" Cinema Display and send me the same thing while your buyin;);)

Macs tend to be known for graphics, though majority of games do work on OS :):)

Radish?

yeap i agree

my guess is, they are 30ms and he has no idea what he's talking about.

Ok that sentence makes no sense at all.

There have been a couple threads here somewhat recently dealing with Apple lcd specs. And as well, on the Apple discussion board, there are quite a few sources. Apple having crappy specs tho their lcds is a pretty common thing.

Uhh, all Trinitron monitors have those lines, and they arent dead pixels. It's not some problem with Apple engineering, it part of the technology of all Trinitron monitors

As far as the user is concerned, it does "look" like a line of dead pixels.

"Old" in the gaming community represents anything older than a few months.

here's some specs on apple's 23" hd display

[ tech overview ] [ data sheet ]

as you can see a 350:1 contrast ratio is quite poor when samsung's latest have 700:1

(tho it's a 19" not 23")

and those extra 4 inches don't mean ****! :D  here's an nec monitor, 20", that has a 350:1 ratio:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/sectors/Rebates...80UX_manual.pdf

and a 21" samsung with 500:1

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...2110&CatId=1410

all you've shown is that samsung makes a better monitor than apple. would you like a cookie?

aaron901: ut2004 is not that old... it only came out in nov 2003 as far as google has been able to help me. the mac version has been out for awhile itself. i have no problem admitting that if you're a serious gamer (like you go to lan parties and have frag fests and go to those giant conventions where people just play against each other and win serious money), then no, you don't want a mac. but if you want to play games on a mac, it's not like it used to be 5 years ago...

superfula: how does the sentence make no sense? you said they were over 30ms. i said they probably are 30ms, and you don't know what you're talking about. i could make little pictures for you if your that slow. or perhaps math?

superfula = "apple displays are rated way over 30ms response"

apple displays = 30ms response

therefore, superfula = unintelligent

better now?

now if you would like to see something that doesn't make sense:

"Apple having crappy specs tho their lcds is a pretty common thing."

english... do you speak it?

btw, you still have provided no source. just because there are threads here does not mean someone tested it. it means someone said "hey look, it ghosts! whee!" and posted that observation.

gaming for the mac is not worth it.

right now there are some games for mac os x and windows at the same time but still the number of titles available for it is too small

-and do you know what kind of gaming PC you can buy or make yourself for the price of an apple?

Hmm...did another overly-enthusiastic zealot fall in here? What's really funny is that he's insulting other Apple users and supporters with his blind attempt to cheer anything macintosh, to such a degree that he is completely disregarding logic and the best interests of the person that asked the initial question.

Typical.

Long story short, if you intend to purchase a Mac with the sole purpose of using it as a gaming machine, you will be disapointed. Period. Apple makes wonderful machines that can be used for many many things, but gaming is not their strong point, basically because Apple doesn't design them with hardcore gaming in mind. Use the best tools for whatever job you want to do. Your best bet would be to go to a local Apple dealer and ask to run some demos on their G5 systems and see for yourself if you get the kind of performance you want, and also take a look at the gaming titles they have available.

As for oik...you shouldn't insult your intellectual superiors...especially ones that have been around for awhile and have proven they know what they are talking about. I've known superfula for quite a long while, and I assure you, he's forgotten more useful information than you will probably ever chance upon in your sad little life.

aww, that's nice

considering that most of it seems like opinion backed up by a post count, i don't think i'll have to worry about how much he "knows".

couldn't have said it better. (Y)

oik, i'm not a serious gamer and i don't go to LAN parties, but i think gaming on my Mac sucks ass. i believe most of the Mac users would agree that Apple machines are not "gaming material".

now all you've shown is that you're a Mac zealot. would you like a cookie?

Again, is your selfesteem so low you need to insult others to make you feel better? Good grief.

Honestly, I don't know what the hell I was trying to say in that sentence.

I said Apple's lcds are rated at over 30ms. You asked for proof, and I said to try searching here or at the Apple discussion forums and you'll get your proof. I'm not sure how you thought the posts would be based on opinions. And what does a few ms matter anyway? I threw a number off the top of my head, trying to remember the old posts. I guess I don't see the big deal when comparing "over 30" to "30". Both numbers suck. I've been around Macs long enough to know what's correct and incorrect.

As aaron said so beautifully "gaming on my Mac sucks ass". It's the truth. I know it's a shocker that there's something a Mac doesn't do well at, but it's true. If you want to be a Mac zealot, do it somewhere else. Perhaps spymac or 4osx. Usually people here aren't that biased towards Apple.

I'm still trying to figure out how this guy doesn't have some sort of restriction on his account? *knock knock* Any mods out there?

i'm not that biased towards osx, but if somebody wants to know which mac he should buy for gaming, then god damn, we don't need 30 people to come into his thread and say "gaming on macs suck". i know it's true, but there are still lots of games out there, and if he wants to know about a mac, then he wants to know about a mac.

to the normal people out there:

i got all those oreos with my secret matter duplication machine. verrry expensive.

Mac's offer nothing gaming-wise to a PC gamer. If you have a PC for gaming on, its fruitless to buy a Mac to game on (unless you just either want one, or want to learn about macs also).

no no no, read again. apparently he wasn't sure if he should get a Mac for gaming, and we Mac users should let him know that Mac is not an ideal gaming machine, so that he can make an informed decision, instead of forking out a few thousand dollars and be disappointed in no time.

what we don't need is 1 Mac zealot comes into his thread and display his zealotry. :p

That's fine, but if someone wants to buy a Mac for gaming, I'll be one of the first ones to set them straight. There are OK games for the Mac. Granted, the games are becoming more and more common, but the majority of the games that are ported, are ported horribly. Either that, or you need one hell of a Mac to run them. It's not the hardware at issue...it's the os. As many good things as OS X does, gaming is not one of them. If someone comes here, or anywhere, asking which Mac he/she should buy for gaming, I'll say there are no good Macs for gaming...because Macs SUCK at playing games. There are decent games on OS X, but it still stucks. Always have, possibly always will. And I like it that way.

If you want gaming to not suck on OS X, you need to get some companies to start writing these games from scratch instead of simply porting them. Course life on earth as we know it will have been long gone when that happens, so there's no need to fret.
