s0ldats
ok, i'm deciding between a 17 inch g4 powerbook (new model processor w/ 128mb video memory, 1gb ram, 80gb 5400rpm hd), or a comparably configured g4 desktop. is there a huge performance difference between the laptop model and the desktop model? i plan on taking one of these to college for photo and video editing. sebaz
I suggest you not getting RAM upgrade from Apple. Get the stock RAM and get some ram from Crucial.com or the like. Cheaper in the end. If you are looking into going into video editing, and with the amount of money you are about to spend, have look into a G5? Most video editing tool are optimized for a G5 processor (from Apple at least). Besides you will benefit from the higher bandwidth the G5 architecture offers, compare to the "old" G4 desktop. Firewire 800/400. I believe your better off with a G5, just my .02 cents
giga Veteran Posted April 20, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 20, 2004 Personally I would take the lappie just for the convenience of its portability. And you'll probably will be able to use them in class which is good also. Whats your budget?
TheDreamX
I don't know too much about differences about Mac desktops and notebooks, but I am at college with a PB G4. I use my Titanium PowerBook (867 MHz CPU) for video and it's great. For college, I would highly recommend a laptop and the newer PB models blow the pants off of mine so it should work well. My school requires everyone to have a laptop, but I know people elsewhere who have desktops instead and they regret it. Sure, you can get a more powerful desktop for less money, but as I said, a laptop would be so much better for school.
s0ldats
thanks for the replies. i did think about getting the g5 and it's not off the radar. however, i would like the versatility of having a laptop at college. i am just starting to venture into video editing, but i am a veteran of adobe photoshop since version 5. sebaz: thanks for the ram tip. btw, would 1gb be enough for my type of work? basically what i'm looking for is a solid computer that will get me through college without having to upgrade every year(inevitable, i know :) ) the software i will be using mostly will be final cut, photoshop cs, illustrator cs, and idvd . sadatkarim: no budget, but i'm trying to stay as low as possible. basically with the configuration i listed, it came out to about 3300. with sebaz' tip, i could lower it maybe, 200-300. sebaz
OSX is ram hungry mofo...having said that, the more RAM the merrier. One gig will be nice for your needs.

s0ldats
thanks a lot for the quick replies! i'm pretty much leaning toward the powerbook. are there any things i should buy to get me going besides just the powerbook and software? i have no use for an ipod since my music collection is much bigger than the largest ipod, but are there any other useful accessories i should look toward? aaron901
go for the PowerBook. :) get an iPod man, there's no excuse for that~ my music collection is bigger than my iPod too! the thing is you don't have to throw the whole collection onto the iPod right? GET AN IPOD MINI!!! :D
s0ldats
:) mayyybee :) anyway, another thing i'd like to know is how easy is filesharing between a windows xp box and an OSX system? for example: all my mp3s are on my xp box, i'd rather just leave them there and be able to access them from the powerbook when needed. SonComet
I say go for the 17" powerbook. But the fact that I want a laptop very badly makes my opinion biased ;).
