LIVE CD with CMD prompt only

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a Live distro that can only boot to the CMD prompt and has some of the Linux text processing tools sed, awk and grep and preferably the Nano editor.

One problem is that most don't work with the 9600 cards yet in X. Plus for what I need I don't need X and it takes too long to boot.

I need SED in particular and it just doesn't work well in Windows. esp with redirection and reg expressions.

Any ideas? I don't feel like dual-booting just to use every once in a while.

the gentoo install disk acts as a live disk and gives a command prompt with a full set of progs to use

slax (my fav linux live cd) starts at a command prompt then you can choose to load kde and the gui

I think ANY knoppix will let you set the boot parameters to not boot X on startup.

I have a lovely live linux cd that I have labelled 'LAN SERVER' and I'm not sure where I got it, or whats its name is... but it seems perfect...

Thanks, I noticed it has SED. I'll give it a try since I like using Slackware best. It didn't mention anywhere on the site that you *could* boot it without X.

The mirrors are a bit slow and so's the Torrent. I'll get it tommorrow.

I'm thinking Damn Small Linux here...

Fits on a business card sized CD, too!

I must say either the gentoo live cd (the 2004 one fixed the stupid problems with DHCP) or tomsrtbt. Tomsrtbt has everything you want on floppy. I beleive he has a CD iso as well.

Some one hs already said SLAX but Thomas (The Deveoper) has rleased a MiniSlax which the ISO is 30MB It is the standard cd with x and any of the x dependent Programs. You can find it here - ftp.linux.cz/pub/linux/linux-live.org/SLAX-4.0.x/mini-slax -

Hope it helps =)
