rstroud
I'm just looking to switch, so I found an iBook 500 dual USB from a friend for $425. I really just want to be able to play with it and learn OSX, I may purchase another apple in the future. Is that a fair price? And does anyone know a good place to get Office X with an Educational discount? Thanks! Also, I'm going to upgrade to panther for 69 bucks from Apple.com... Other specs 10 gb hd Jaguar Airport 320 megs of ram

rstroud
He doesn't need it anymore b/c he upgraded to a powerbook. Do you think this will give a good experience? Or should I get one that supports quartz extreme and is a little newer. I could spend up to 600 or so. I can wait longer if needed.
oik
personally, i have a 500mhz g3 ibook, with 256mb ram, and with jaguar, it's... ok. i guess for someone testing the waters of "macland" it's good enough. i would certainly suggest any machine that could use quartz extreme... another thing to consider, is the hard drive. only 10gb? i understand you don't need a huge one, but hell apple doesn't even make ipods with hd's that small anymore, ya know what i mean? i have been informed in the past though, that the difference between jaguar and panther on hardware that can't use quartz extreme is significant. so it might turn out good for you. i will keep looking to see what i can turn up. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...4124488806&rd=1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...4124713098&rd=1 there are a couple under $600 (for now) that are worth looking into. i think all the "ibook 800mhz" (hint: ebay search terms) are able to use quartz extreme.
