marcoo
I found another Linux distribution. It doesn't require installation at all. Just plug CD in, boot and run Linux. There is no HD installation. Seems like it's cool. The only 'but' - it's beta version. What do you think?
zipgenius
Really good for newbies: I have the old 3.1 release and sometimes I use it (I use Windows by default as I develop free software for Windows).
Zetter
Knoppix has been around for a while now and it's a great tool. There are other bootable linux distros and many other distros such as SuSE have bootable (eval) versions that can be used in the same way. http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=cd has a long list of even more bootable cds to try Edited April 21, 2004 by Zetter

Fred Derf Veteran Posted April 21, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 21, 2004 Just plug CD in, boot and run Linux. There is no HD installation. There is a hard disk installation script included. Once it is installed it is 99+% the same as Debian. You can run it off the CD-ROM drive but it will be slow compared to a HD-based installation. Depends what you want to do, some are specfically designed for gaming, some diagnostic or network tools and others are more like installed linux distros
xp1ode
or you can try this list if the one provided by Zetter is not enough Linux LiveCDs. Knoppix is by far the best on my standards and experience been using Knoppix since 3.0 and i absolutely love it. I've tried and have many others in my collection and can't compare the use of them to knoppix, for everything for rescuing, for installing on a drive, for playing, etc.. The only one that i've been also happy with aside from knoppix is the unnoficial Slax Live cd, is the only one that recognized my audio drivers on my old laptop (aside from Lindows). Have fun trying out Knoppix, dont just use it from the cd, if you can install it on to a drive and see how it runs, it did great for me.... marcoo
What if I install it on HD. Will it screw up my WinXP Pro? By the way I like the list [Linux LiveCDs] with primary functions. Thanks. What Live Linux CDs are best for: 1. Desktop 2. Development 3. Home entertainment Edited April 21, 2004 by marcoo

markwolfe Veteran Posted April 21, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 21, 2004 Without knowing your knowledgebase on Linux, I will have to agree with fred666. Linux will require free space on your drive. It does not install (with a few minor exceptions) into a Windows partition. You can add another drive, or you can change your current paritioning to make room for a Linux installation. What you do will depend on your options and preferences. marcoo
If I need Linux partition as well, so I don't see good reason of installing Live Linux-on-CD to HD. The better to install full distribution in this case.

One Linux-on-CD is installed to your HD it is a full distribution. I am writing this in Knoppix as we speak. My CD-ROM drive is empty.
Bug0049
I did an install of knoppix once, but I never did a dual boot. It was actually quite easy to install. I like knoppix, its one of the better bootable distros.
