Netatalk woes.....

Recommended Posts

So I've finally managed to get netatalk installed and running (it's taken a while, see previous topic for a long, long story).

According to every FAQ I've read, it should all be working fine and dandy. It's not.

I figure it may have something to do with my network: have 2 NICs in my linux box, one connects to cable modem and the outside world, other connects to belkin router and mac/pcs. Internet connection sharing is all cool, no worries there.

When I try and select an appleshare server on my mac , nothin pops up. I've tried every IP address I can find on my network (The IP address for the NIC that connects to the router is 194.168.1.1), my 'local host' name - everything..... but zip.:(

I've tried specifying 'interface =eth1' in the netatalk.conf file - still no luck.

Anyone care to help? I've spent the past 3 hours trying to figure this out, and I've even missed that episode of the simpsons when Homer is the booze king dude / prohibition.

Here's something else that may well be pertinent:

remember....I have no idea what is going on here, go easy on me.

um, I have no idea.

If you mean via the Mac side of things, Appletalk is set to connect via ethernet/ TCP/IP. My username on mac is same as my user on linux.

Apart from this, I checked to see if the kernel supported appletalk/file protocol, and it should do.

I had terrible problems trying to install netatalk, and finally managed it through 'webmin'.

I'm guessing the problem lays in the service not starting correctly, which I assume will have something to do with the configuration files of Netatalk. They're all pretty much default, except specifying that eth1 is the interface it should use.

Still clueless, but thanks for any help anyone can give.....

are you trying to view files from the mac on your network which includes linux machines etc?

if so you need the filing protocol installed on the nix server.

what exactly are you trying to do with this appetalk service

Apparently, by installing netatalk, I should be able to view files etc FROM my mac, on my linux box. To do the reverse I need AFPFS, which is in some state of god-knows-what since development stopped 2 years ago, or something like that.

SO Netatalk is installed. I should now be able to see my linux box from the chooser/appletalk dialogue on my mac: no dice, dr jones.

This is the guide I've been using so far.

ok we'll go through this step by step, your service is running(atalkd) and your module is installed(apple)

now i want you to type

hostname on the pc where the apple service is running, type

/pathtoatalk/atalk_name

it will then set your default hostname which is whatever you set your machine to, so if its mcnelson.com it will be set to mcnelson

now run afpd_run

it will determine if the AFPD should run, which most cases its yes.

next run, atalk_bground, which will determine if the daemon will run in the background, default again is yes.

once this is done, please post your atalkd.conf file, which is probably located in /etc/ directory so we can make sure that is set right

did you give up on this?

Not at all! I'm determined to get to the bottom of this!

Sent an email via Neowin, I guess you didn't get it! Will PM you later, rather than drag this out into a massive thread, unless anyone is interested in my long quest to make netatalk work? (I doubt it highly)
