Considering Moving Back To MDK10.0

Recommended Posts

what has been people's experiences with MDK10.0?

i have been stuck in windows for quite some time due to my workplace...but

i've seen alot of good things happening lately and i have also awaited the unison

of kernel 2.6 and KDE 3.2 at a stable level. and so far MDK is the first to accomplish this.

so my main question is:

is URPMI up to speed with the newest release? are there full enough mirrors with alot of applications

like there should be...or is it still too soon.

i usually wait about 3-4 months before using a distro so that all the new software is added to the

newest mirrors and there is a huge selection.

let me know what you guys think of it so far. im really intreged by the newest version.

Well all I will say is this.. I installed Mandrake 10 Community and wow! This is the first time I've actually seriously thought about using a linux distro for day to day use rather than Windows XP.. Haven't been into XP since I installed some time last week.. And yeh urpmi and Mandrake Update are working fine for me I'm running CE with all updates and it's running like a dream.. :)

I'll never go back to Mandrake. Too many packages I'll never use on that one, and too many annoying little issues overall (because it's the equivalent of an OEM distro).

I'm using the test releases of ArkLinux. Other than the partitioning not functioning yet (no dual-booting) and a couple little issues, it'll be a solid release when it's done. WAY better than MDK. It's 1 CD, very little crap that is easily removed from the system, and a 5-star package management system that will leave ya with a warm fuzzy inside. :) Combine that with a minimally-modified KDE and yer golden. Give that one a try if you want a distro that is REALLY easy to install. All you have to do is configure networking (easily found, right on the panel) and you are set.

Umm... gentoo has had KDE3.2 and kernel 2.6 stable for ages ;)

EDIT so you decided to leave slack? I thought you were getting on well with slack?

I'm installing Gentoo on my laptop at the moment, I gotta say that it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling getting my system running manually.

I have Kernel 2.6.5 compiled and the latest version of X so far.

My only gripe so far with Gentoo is that I haven't booted into a graphical environment yet because im compiling KDE v3.2. It has been comiling since 3pm friday, its now 2pm on Sunday, so that means that it has taken 47 hours, to compile KDE.

All I can say is that this thing better be blisteringly fast or I am gonna be so annoied.

(of course I cant expect it to compile in a flash, after all my laptop is a Pentium 2, 366mhz, with 192MB ram)

i liked slack yes...but it felt kinda lifeless...and there were weird little bugs here and there that i ran into alot.

overall i liked slackware...but im a mandrake man deep down.

Mandrake 10 is off the hook. I haven't booted to WinXP in 2 weeks for anything besides playing Battlefield Vietnam. I had Battlefield working and then I rebooted and now it freezes at the opening EA screen. Gotta find a fix.

I can't wait for companies to make their games for both Win and Linux like UT2004 and Doom3 and Quake. I wonder if Half Life 2 will have a linux version, then I'll never use windows again (except at work, because I have to).
