What is the best instant messaging prog on Linux?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I currently use Kopete, i'd like to know if there is better.

And globally, i'd like to find a web site which helps choosing the best software in all categories (web browser, file manager, firewall, antivirus, ftp, email, photo editor, video editor, etc). If you can help i'd be glad :)

There are HUNDREDS of sites like that.

And all of them say different things! :pinch:

The truth is, Linux is a freedom-of-choice world, and everyone can pick what suits their individual needs best. Not everyone wants a large Ximian Evolution interface for their email. Some prefer smaller kmail or even mutt or pine.

Find ones that suit you best, and if there is something lacking, post something like "I use Opera as a browser, but I would like a feature that does xxxx, and I can't seem to find it in Opera. Am I missing something, or is there an alternative that suits my needs better". You will get good, specific answers to that kind of question. :)

Choice is a bad thing for 95% of users. People hate having a choice - that is why bundled software is so popular.

5% of the users think choice is a great thing and they would like loads of IM clients to try. Personally, I'd rather each distro be shipped with the 'best' program out there and have options in settings to download and install more. Otherwise Linux is going to turn into a huge, sprawled mess.

Look how great Apache is - it's the only choice for opensource webserver for most people. Also, look at KOffice. OpenOffice competition has basically destoryed the project from what it was.

I usually use GAIM, but I just installed Gentoo on my laptop so im trying Kopete at the moment , to see how I like it, and I gotta say its pretty nice, the only thing its missing is Tabbed Windows, I might go back to GAIM because of that

Your point is somewhat off-target.

Choice is good. And while the major Linux distributers know this, they also know a "home" user may prefer a default set.

That is why they generally default to ONE Window Manager/Desktop Environment installed (Fedora is Gnome, Mandrake is KDE, etc.) They default to a preferred one ot two of other applications, too.

Those who *want* the full range of choices choose an advanced install (or less noob-ish distro), and get their choices installed.

So, what you are saying Linux needs.... They already do.
