I need a 24/7 linux shell

Recommended Posts

I need a free shell or a very cheap shell to host sc_trans. Its a program that connects to my shoutcast server and sends the mp3 data to my shoutcast server instead of me using winamp and connecting to my shoutcast server. I need about 1.5gb of space to upload my mp3s and its going to send out 128kbps constantly. I was using my host server it was 2ghz server and it was using 10percent CPU and they didn't like that. So if someone can help me out ill appriate it!

I am not familiar with shoutcast, so I don't know what you are looking for...

Are you looking for something to run on your existing Linux PC uninterrupted, like a service?

I use fluxbox ( because its reallly fast and has practically zero memory footprint, KDE and GNOME are just bloatware :p )

but I don't think you need a gui at all, like you said, just a shell will do.

Anyway, you could normally boot a thin-shell from another PC via LAN, but this would not be advisable at all if you were going to run a server.

So, I would just take a distro, and not install Kde/Gnome/even X. and of course, set up firewalls and such if this is a server. (Tho perhaps you have a hardware firewall on the network)

Shoutcast streaming constant 128 kbps is pretty expensive. So I'm just letting you know that you'll be hardpressed to find someone who'll just give a shell out for that...at least I'd think so.

Either way good luck man :D

Thats quite a lot of space and bandwidth... what you really need is to find a hosting plan who'll be happy with the CPU usage and who'll give you shell access. Not many people are just gonna have that sort of capability just lying around going to waste, so I don't think anyone's gonna hook you up here. I might be wrong though.

it screws up the quality because you probably only actually get something like 18k-36k upload real world and then you have to take into account the multiple connections on the stream.

Places like mediacast1 have plans for 500 MB of space with 10 connections with 128k stream to a shoutcast server at like $48/month. About $30/month if you are doing a stream from your computer to their server which in turn streams it to the other connections. But if you are going to spend $50/month you might as well get a cheap dedicated box. I've seen them as low as $60/month for a year contract, but usually the connection sucks, but a shoutcast stream should be ok. If you can't afford that much, then I don't know what to tell you.

I already have host to handle the 10 connects or hwatever i just need a server to send data to my server

Download the SHOUTcast DSP Plug-In for Mac OS X, Linux and FreeBSD

This archive is for advanced users who wish to source content on their Mac OS X, Linux or FreeBSD servers and feed the audio into a SHOUTcast DNAS instead of using Windows. The Linux version permits input from a soundcard in addition to MP3 files on disk. Please refer to the example .conf file included with the archive for more information on using this beta unsupported method of broadcasting.

To download these tools, please click here. [filesize - 226k] Instructions are included with the installer.
