mark52230
I've got 2 old pcs and want to put linux on them both.. To aid in my learning of all things linux.. But what distros could I put on them? They're both 450Mhz and got 128Mb ram.. Right now Slackware is installing on one so I hope that was a correct decision. The idea was to put Mandrake on my primary pc so it just works (lol) and I've done that so I wanted "harder" distros on the other pcs. So, was slackware a good choice and what would you put on the other? Cheerz ppl!

mark52230
Yeah Slack seems to be running just fine at the moment on one of them.. And what's this linux from scratch? I've never heard of it..
Evolution
Yeah Slack seems to be running just fine at the moment on one of them..And what's this linux from scratch? I've never heard of it.. You're basically creating your own distro from the source-code. There are certainly a number of advantages along with learning how linux really works. If you have a lot of time and you're willing to read a lot of documentation then go for it.

The only thing you might want to do is to use a more lightweight GUI than KDE or Gnome. Something like Fluxbox or XFce.
markwolfe Veteran Posted April 25, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 25, 2004 Let me put in my 100% agreement with fred666. Opposite to the World of Windows, where you have to use old versions (with their security problems) on older PCs, with Linux, you will want to use the current versions on older PCs, but just choose lighter weight Window Mangagers (as fred666 suggested) instead. (or text mode, if you have a REALLY old PC with precious little RAM).
