Frank
The spam from "spam arrest" is probably coming from their "affiliates" that they provide, not the company. Nevermind, just read the article.
bangbang023 Veteran Posted April 25, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 25, 2004 Neowin does not get to choose the ads that circulate. The admins simply sign up with banner ad companies. If you have an issue with the particular ad, there is not much we can do about it. There have already been drastic changes to the AD companies Neowin uses and I don't see how this ad is that big a deal. If you know it's a bad piece of software, just don't support it. nXP_151 Veteran Posted April 25, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 25, 2004 AFAIK, the admins can request the type of ads, when you register in Advertising company, the ads that comes to your site is random. I remember the admins was requesting ads that relates to computer.
Steven P. Administrators Posted April 25, 2004 Administrators Share Posted April 25, 2004 Spam Arrest bought a block of ad views from Neowin, they were accepted after Redmak reviewed the banners that would get displayed and its targeted advertising something that seems to take all of our time up lately is sorting the ads. We are unaware if a company spams their customers and we don't 'screen' every company that approaches us, to do that we'd have to deny ads from MS because they are also criminals to a certain extent. Or how about Google that doesn't even have a decent privacy disclaimer (there was a big thing about it in the news recently). We will most certainly review the implications of displaying more ads on Neowin but I think that unless there are damaging repercussions or consequences people should just lighten up and accept that Neowin has to sell ad space in order to pay for the services you get otherwise for free. and Mxxcon I also want to add that the news link you provided is hardly gospel. I remember being one of very few sites that openly supported Lavasoft after reputable sites claimed that Lavasoft were going to charge for AdAware 6.0 and that they were only going to update the revision files at a cost and general accusations towards them for 'failing their community' all fud as it turned out. Oh I remember a reputable anti-spyware site accused them of allowing certain spyware through, which turned out to be complete bs, alot of sites swallowed it tho.. The final point I want to make is, you are not forced to click on the banner, no more than a linux fan is forced to click on any Microsoft ad we display. Right on Neobond, most sites that advertise are unreputable, if you screened ads for the companies that are reputable, there wouldn't be many ads....... but not much revenue either.... and Neowin wouldn't have funds to exist. Thank You and that's my opinion.

Where in there did I come close to claiming I support spyware? Of course I don't support it, but I do support Neowin. Let's face it, their is alot of software that does stuff to our system we don't want it to and I avoid it as much as possible. However, it's just an ad, and anyone, with half a brain, would research a piece of software before blindly installing it.
