Kernel 2.6.5 + KDE 3.2.2 & Mandrake 9.1

Recommended Posts

OK i have a basic tutorial on compiling a kernel... and i'm downloading 2.6.5 atm

I run Mandrake 9.1 - I've heard that some disto's need patches to the kernel etc to work properly... Is this the case with my current version of mandrake

Or will compiling kernel 2.6.5 work staight out the box???

2ndly

I've not really been able to find a good KDE install guide - i'm wishing to change from 3.1.4 to 3.2.2

again is there anything i need to know once i have the install guide? (like patches or addons i need to compile with it so it works?)

Thanks Scott

The kernel should work no problem.

As far as installing KDE on mandrake goes, I have no idea because I use a sensible distro where all i need to do is type "emerge kde" and it handles everything for me :)

it was utter hell for me to upgrade 9.1/9.2 to KDE 3.2...and i deem it impossible. because of the way that MDK handles its file system. why not upgrade to 10? it has both kernel 2.6 and KDE 3.2

i already tired 10.0 community but it jus was pretty hellish... Kept Freezeing all the time, which is very unusual... i might jus wait until the official build is availble for download and then give that ago

After spending like 2 hrs last night i eventually gave up compiling the nu kernel... was SOOOO slow.. unreal!

My apt-get front-end (Synaptic) makes upgrading to KDE 3.2.x a click and go affair. He should look into apt4rpm and see if it's as good as Debian's apt-get.
