mark52230
Ok I was bored so decided to check out the gentoo homepage. It says that when you install a package it optimizes it for your hardware.. Does that mean I'd get a performance increase over what I'm using at the moment (Mandrake)? And if I decided to give gentoo a go where are the iso images to download? I had a quick look on one of the mirrors and I could find a live cd iso and "stage" stuff?
kjordan2001
Yes, you'd get a performance boost over Mandrake since it's optimized for your processor. Although some people say you lose that boost because of all the time you spend compiling stuff. Download from: http://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/release...vecd/universal/ Get minimal if you plan to do a stage 1 (full compilation) or get the universal if you plan to start from another stage. You could also grab the packages iso and install some binary packages for big packages like KDE, GNOME, etc if you wanted to.
Si Veteran Posted April 25, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 25, 2004 You build Gentoo bit by bit It's not for the faint hearted :s

Is one for like a net install and one all on the cd? And does the latest version come with the 2.6 kernel series? My motherboard chipset and the 2.4 series don't mix very well.. It is basically a net-install distro, but they do the GRP (Gentoo Reference Platform) so that you can do offline installs. If you want 2.6 you need to do an online install at the minute :(
mark52230
Right now I'm with you so I download that minimal iso boot from that and download what I need? Just one last thing.. Mandrake uses mandrake rpms, debian .deb packages, slackware .tgz etc does gentoo have something like that?
kongit
gentoo uses the portage system. The portage system is made up of ebuilds. Ebuilds direct dependencies , what source and patches to download, and how to compile the source downloaded.
