External USB 2.0 120 GIG HD help

hi there, i am using Redhat in school right now and i need to get some of my files from my USB external HD. How do i mount the drive so i can see it. I don't have the root password, is there anyother of doing it? I really need help cuz i need to get my files and all they have are machines running Redhat 9. Thank you!

If it is the school's PC, you should probably contact the sysadmin to see about the permissions needed to mount a device like that. They either already have sufficient permissions for you, or can get you set up.

And, there is a less-than-ethical way to try to get root on the box, but that will only get you in trouble...

I really think you should just ask the admin. :yes:

Plus, if you have to ask how to reset a root password, you probably don't need to know it (especially on someone else's PC).

Sorry, but I think that you will have to seek the answer another way, if you want to go that way. (plus, you can't change the root password back, to make it so no one will know). It will be quickly found out. It will be permanently changed. And when they find out who did it, you will find it wasn't worth it. :no:
