downloading debian?

Hi there,

I want to download debian linux but i want to know if i have to download all 7 cd's to install or are there one or two that i need and the rest just extra app's and sources?

I have never tried debian, but what is "extra" will vary from person to person. Many consider a GUI as unnecessary. I can tell you that (for a home user) there will be a lot of "extra" stuff in those CDs you will not need (sendmail, apache, and other 'server-type' apps). Not sure which CDs hold what, though...

Source code is a good thing to have (especially for the kernel), so you will probably want that.

I know over time i will want to get all discs, but just now i only need to install a basic desktop system (kde) i only have a 150k connection so i dont want to spend all week getting 7 cd's :D

Use a friend's connection, if they have higher speeds. :)

I would download the netinst boot image (80MB or so) and let the installer download the components that you want.

It's not very efficient way to install multiple copies of debian on multiple computers but it is more efficient for a single installation.

i can't net install beacause i can't get my sagem adsl modem setup, all inet access through linux is out just now (that's why i keep xp install)

i will grab cd 1&2 then try setup modem
