markwolfe Veteran Posted April 28, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 28, 2004 I have never tried debian, but what is "extra" will vary from person to person. Many consider a GUI as unnecessary. I can tell you that (for a home user) there will be a lot of "extra" stuff in those CDs you will not need (sendmail, apache, and other 'server-type' apps). Not sure which CDs hold what, though... Source code is a good thing to have (especially for the kernel), so you will probably want that.

Fred Derf Veteran Posted April 28, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 28, 2004 Hi there,I want to download debian linux but i want to know if i have to download all 7 cd's to install or are there one or two that i need and the rest just extra app's and sources? cheers I would download the netinst boot image (80MB or so) and let the installer download the components that you want. It's not very efficient way to install multiple copies of debian on multiple computers but it is more efficient for a single installation.
cpugeniusmv
i'd grab CD1 and CD2, if it needs any other packages it can fetch them individually via FTP.
