32 and 16 bit color: shadows problem

Recommended Posts

Hello again :)

I've noticed I do not have any Icon shadow if I set my desktop @ 16bit color depth. Setting it # 32bit, shadows are ok.

Here you can see a sample of what I mean. On the left, a shot @ 32bit. On the right, a shot @ 16bit.

Any idea of solving this? (no shadows make icons really... ugly).

I've got a GeForce II mx, with Detonator 8.05 (same with other detonators, Detonators XP (21.81) too...).

This is not a problem, it is a feature of Windows XP.

Shadows are show under icons when you have enough colors on screen to be able to create the effect (32-bit). When you are in 16-bit mode not enough colors are available so it doesn't show the effect.

So it is not a problem, it is how it is supposed to be.

But I cannot understand... I mean... 16 bit is not enough for a drop shadow? Of course it must be "transparent" with any kind of desktop but... that way icons are so ugly... :|

Personally I wouldn't have thought 32-bit was necessary either but MS obviously thinks (or knows) that it is needed and so you can only have drop shadows in 32-bit mode. Nothing you can do about it I am afraid!
