eMac Questions

Recommended Posts

Ok, just a few emac questions. Probably gonna get myself one, but here goes:

1) Speakers - any good? 16watts sounds like enough for listening to music. Currently I have 14 watts speakers and I'm very happy with those, so will the emacs be comparible to them?

2) Monitor. I'd be wanting to run at 1280x960, but this limits me to 75Hz. Can this be overridden? I see they are 0.25 dot pitch so should be better than the fuzzy peices of crap Dell ships.

3) Hard drives - Can these be upgraded? If not, I'll just buy a firewire one or set up a cheap file server with loads of HDDs in them.

Also, anyone know if Apple UK is doing a similar '$99 rebate' offer so I can get a free HP printer (would be a bonus as I currently only have a laser one, a small colour one for printing off the odd page would be good for me)

1. They are ok, nothing great

2. I dont think so, if you install the screenspanning hack you can use an external screen at any res/rate

3. Yeah, you can upgrade them.

The speakers are nothing great. They are not designed for high-quality music. You might want to plug your old ones in. Monitor quality is really nice, and the hard drives are upgradable. It's just a standard HD.

I will have a question as well, if anyone please could answer:

My monitor for my computer and my TV are both flat CRT screen, the display(what shows on screen) are both kinda funny shape. Will emac's screen be funny shaped.

I use eMacs at my work place all the time. Very good power in those little things. The speakers are actually pretty good, and I listen to hard trace on them sometimes when I get bored. A eMac would be a very good investment.

Yes, Apple UK is offering a rebate for HP printers. Order one as usual, and when you get to the "Accessories page" (or whatever its called) you see the printer deals. You get ?70 rebate. (I'll be getting a SD eMac w/HP Printer in the next 2 weeks:DD)

I don't imagine so, the emac also has a flat crt screen so i assume the output would be the same on your tv and monitor.

Great - I'll be ordering soon.

While I understand they are nothing special, 16watts is a fair amount of power for built in speakers - I think the iBook only has 1watt ones and they are quite powerful for them being so small.

All I want to do is listen to some music on them, I'm not a 'pro audio' guy so it's not a great big deal. The eMac sounds great and as I said I'll probably be ordering one very soon.

Hanxuuk - The CRT in the eMac is a flat tube, like the Sony Wega TVs. They are not curved.

Really don't know how to explain myself now...

not the physical screen itself, I mean when the contents shows on the screen, no the sides, if you have a flat CRT screen, and look carefully they will have not regular shape. or maybe it's just my screen, both my monitor and tv are sony.

Sorry for the bad explaination.

I would have to disagree with the statement that an eMac is a good investment. Personally I don't see why anyone would consider something like a CRT a good investment. Not saying that the LCD iMac is any better or worse than an eMac, but something to consider. Of course, if you don't mind a CRT, then go for it.

Can you hook an iBook up to an external CRT? If you can then why not get a 12" ibook and hook a monitor up to it when you aren't mobile. If this can't be done then please ignore my recommendation.

Would the hack work on the new 1.25Ghz ones?

eMac speakers are great for casual music listening, however at high volumes, the display sorta gets some interferance, sorta wavey like... but if you desire more, just run it to some external speaks or stereo!
