vpc or vnc?

Recommended Posts

i have an athlon pc, which obviously would be much faster than anything i could get from vpc. in fact, i "came across" vpc6 the other day, and tried installing windows xp on it, and it kept hanging... it took well over 8 hours and still couldn't even complete. i gave up on that and then remembered vnc... so i set up a vnc server (the one from realvnc) on my pc, and a viewer (vncthing) and it was okay, except for vncthing making part of my pc desktop behind the dock, which was a pain in the ass for when i needed the system tray. anyway, i haven't adjusted to xcode yet and my college class uses ms visual studio... so the power thing is also an issue. i cut the resolution on my down to 800x600 and it wasn't bad, but i don't feel that's a real long term solution, since i still sit in front of my pc sometimes.

would it be worth my time looking for a better way to use vnc, or should i try vpc again?

I think you should try VPC again. 8 Hours on a 1.5Ghz G4 doesn't sound right at all...

for those of you suggesting i take a pc with me... it's a 50lb (?) desktop. no thanks. plus, i would need to take a monitor. that's just to much bulk. i'll try what tim said and get back to you.

i got vpc installed and winxp was fine tonight. now i'm updating it all. windows says i am using a 300mhz 686 cpu, but it acts a lot faster than that. i'll try it out, and then come back if i decide to use something else.

If you have XP Pro on the Athlon, you could use Remote Desktop instead of VNC. It seems faster to me, and it will dynamically change the resolution on your client end instead of being stuck on what the server is already set to. There is a Mac client for Remote Desktop available from Remote Desktop Client for Mac.

It wasn't clear in your first post that you wanted a portable solution.

I'd go with roadwarrior's suggestion if you have XP Pro...

Faster than VPC, less bandwidth than VNC...

RDC is definitely the way to go. The terminal server built-in to XP is vastly superior to VNC, and the client is great to. It's also excellent at printer redirection.

It's not neccessarily superior (TightVNC is pretty smart about compression), it's just that it's aware of how windows are drawn and certain low-level graphic elements. Rather than going on the image of the screen, it knows about windows themeselves, and can simply transfer the window changes (rather than the image of the window's changes). RDC should be the best option for you, to be honest :)
