configure Veteran Posted May 10, 2004 Veteran Share Posted May 10, 2004 Sorry if this is redundant. Would the iPod charge itself if it has been placed into the dock that has been connected to the computer with a 9 PIN FireWire connecter?

krmathis
Just a quick question. The cable that get delivered with the iPod is a 6pin (FireWire 400) connector. Have you modified it with a 9pin (FireWire 800) connector? I just wonder how you plan to do this... Solaris
configure Veteran Posted May 10, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted May 10, 2004 Yeah, my laptop has a FireWire 800 port so I had it converted to a 9 PIN cable - My iPod doesn't seem like it's charging. Does this require iTunes?
krmathis
OK I see... :p Not sure, but I really think its strange if FW800 does not give power out like FW400. I dont have the cables to test it on my computer either. The charging is independant of iTunes, so at least that is not the case. Edit: I found this after some search on Google. On-Bus PowerLike its predecessor, FireWire 800 provides significant amounts of power on its bus (up to 45 watts, with a maximum of 1.5 amps and 30 volts). This means that many devices can be powered through the FireWire cable and will not need their own power cables and adapters. For example, Apple`s iPod digital music player uses FireWire as its sole data and power connection. The player can recharge its built-in battery while it`s downloading new music from your computer. configure Veteran Posted May 11, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted May 11, 2004 My apology, it seems like I got a 9 PIN FireWire mixed up with a 4 PIN version :p I found out that the 4 PIN bus isn't powered so I guess it's impossible to charge the iPod in this case :/ One thing though, do you need a dock to charge if you have a 6 or a 9 PIN FireWire port? No. It will charge on firewire without a dock just fine.
