Server load >25.0 = Server too busy

Recommended Posts

If the server load reports greater than 25.0 you get Server Busy errors. If you continue to hit refresh (okay probably not a friendly thing to do given the circumstance) you can see the server load drop closer and closer to 25 and once it goes beneith 25 it displays your request.

I would have expected the server load to be a relative number out of 100 but I guess that 25 = 100% busy time (or the network equivilent).

Are we to assume that if we see a server load of 12.5 that the server is at 50% capacity?

Okay, just asking this question will probably encourage the mods to disable the stats from being displayed. :D

Its not done in %, not really sure what its done in :\

It gives the "server busy" error, because, without it the server would just become completley unusable to anyone (which isnt very useful if you are an admin i guess :p)

Yes obviously it would get too busy to say, er.. too busy.

The point is, if the server load is a percentage, are some board functions cut off once we hit 25% capacity? If so then 75% leeway seems like a lot of breathing room. The server load rarely goes over 40.0 or so.

It is slightly useful to us because when we see it climbing near 25.0 then we can expect server busy messages to be not far off.

For example, the load is now 2.68 so I'm not concerned. It was 39.95 a few seconds ago... Maybe some people moved on to real life.

I only think its when admins are upgrading somthing on the server (or backing up), Dont forget neowin is hosted on a server that most hosting companys dont even have that spec.

actully 1 is full load for 1 processor so if you have 2 processes you can have a max server load of 2 brfore stuff has the wait the o so small time till it gets to it - as far as i know thats the general thing to it - but there are loads of stuff that matters

Smiffy thats wrong, im sure. My server has only once gone high load, and that was to 3, now if what you say is true, thats impossible.

If you want to find out more google "Unix Load"

I've seen that load at about 20 before and it was still running nice and fast for me. This server is a huge improvement over that pile of **** EV1 server.

yeah ive seen this thing keep chugging along even at 20-30(around there she goes bang) loads

its great that it does keep going..

The server load should reach 1.00 for single processor systems or 2.00 for dual processor systems.

Everything above this is too high

Now it says "Server Load: 0.32" and this is normal

Acceptable server load is defined by the admins in the AdminCP. It must be set at 25.

I was just wondering if this cut off was set a little too early. The site seems to work very quickly right up to the server busy message.

Am I to assume that if the server load reaches 100.0 then the server would be too busy to display its too busy message?

Do we ever spike above 70? Above 40 seems pretty rare to me. Above 25 happens enough to be annoying.

Not that I'm complaining. I'm, er, helping. Yea, helping.

The 'server load' figure is nothing to do with a percentage.

It represents how many processes there are in the run queue, i.e. how many tasks are waiting to be processed. So, for example, if the server load is 10, then there are 9 (because it's processing one at the moment) processes that are all waiting for a piece of the action.

On a server with 2 CPUs, such as Neowin's, a load of 2 means that each processor is constantly doing something, but there is nothing else waiting. Anything beneath 2 means that one (or both) CPUs are idle some of the time. (A Good Thing).

Whenever server load is over 1, it means that the CPU (well, a multitude of factors, but CPU is the primary one) is running at 100% load and queuing other tasks until their is spare CPU time and more tasks can be executed.

Unix goodness in action, folks :p.

im sorry to bring this topic back up.. but starting a new thread is pointless.. anyways about 5 minutes ago the server load reached

[ Server Load: 93.99 ]
this is becoming a regular occurance, not that im complaining or anything.. but its getting very regular

is this becuase of autopatcher downloads or something else.. becuase we never really got a response from any of the admins about this, just comments on what server load is
