Max Veteran Posted May 13, 2004 Veteran Share Posted May 13, 2004 Is it possible to back up files on OS X to a Windows machine on a network? Is there any software that comes with OS X to do this? Thanks.
Pilsbury
OSX can connect to Windows shares. Go --> Connect to server You can also make shares available on the Mac. So, yes.
oik
there's one really easy way that i would recommend to you: samba. go to the system preferences > sharing and turn on windows sharing. go to your pc, open up network neighborhood, make a new place (use the address that osx gives you in the sharing dialog) and it should be right there. drag and drop what you want using your pc. if you allow write access to your windows shares, you should be able to open them from the finder. just drag and drop using your mac. SFNE Freak
You can also make shares available on the Mac. Could you explain? I never knew how to do this.

cyKey
Anyone know how to keep network shares open after a reboot? On windows you can create a network drive. I have all my music on my PC hd, and its annoying constantly reconnecting the shares.
Southern Patriot
Well, if you are familiar with UNIX commands, you can create an entry in your /etc/fstab file to automatically mount it, or make an alias on your desktop (or elsewhere) that points to the drive. When you double click on that alias, the system will reconnect the network share.
SFNE Freak
Preferences --> Sharing --> Windows Sharing You said shares, not share. ;)
danbalsh
Just be careful when backing up native Mac formats to the PC (they can loose data) it might be best to creat a DiskImage of the stuff you wanna backup, then copy the single .dmg to your PC :)
Southern Patriot
Another good idea to help alleviate the possibility of damage to your Mac-native file types is to make sure the Windows drive you are storing data on is formatted NTFS, if possible.
