Braces: How am I suppose to eat?

Recommended Posts

I just got braces yesterday. How am I suppose to eat with them? It seems like whatever I eat gets stuck in the damn metal. And I have to go and brush my teeth after I eat just to get rid of the food remnants. Also, my front teeth don't match up correctly; as in when I bite, they don't touch. How am I suppose to chew food if my front teeth don't touch when I bite? Right now, I'm stuck biting with my back teeth, but that's a pain. I swear, I'm gonna choke up some food because of lack of chewing.

Also, flossing is the worst thing in the world now. Having to stick a damn piece of plastic in my mouth before the floss and doing this with all my teeth. It takes me so long. Does anyone here with braces even floss? I rarely ever flossed when I didn't have braces, but it seems like it's required now that the food gets stuck. Nasty.

I have called my Orthodontist, but I'd also like some answers from people who've experienced braces.

Thanks.

mate of mine has braces it really just takes getting used to them i suppose.

i remember he didn't like his one bit for the first week, and he ripped the wire out with

some tools :| :(

he seems to be doing alright with them now. finds it hard with like sandwhices now and again. but apart from that i think he does alright.

Wow. Lots of answers. So I guess time is the only cure. Sigh.

I haven't been called any names. Braces are so common now that so many people at school have them.

I have braces, but get them off July 8th, two years to the month!

The first two weeks are tough and takes some time to get used to them, but later on they will feel like apart of your mouth and you won't notice they're there. Get some noodle soup, jello/pudding, and ice cream... they're good for the first weeks. Flossing is kinda hard since you have to feed the string through the wires, but get some of those plastic floss threaders and it makes it a lot easier. Don't worry about not eating some of the foods you used to eat, I didn't stop eating anything I used to since I got braces and never broke anything.

Good luck! :)

Noodles are the worst. I ate some Ramen today, and when I looked in the mirror I had so many noodle strings stuck in my braces. I'm worried about eating hard foods. My orthodonist says that if I break the braces twice, then I'll get bands around it or something....

Lucky  Hard Candy, blocks of cheese and Apples are what you should watch out for, could really destroy the brackets. You'll get used to them soon. Had mines for five years and only had them taken off last summer(End of Grade 5 till Start of Grade 11)

I had braces back in 8th grade for about 6 months ( I got lucky. I was supposed to have them for more than a year). I don't really remember how I ate, but I only had 6 on the top and 6 on the bottom. Flossing did suck tho and it did take me a while to eat, after the paint went away from first having them on. However, when I got them off, it felt really weird.

I've had them from middle of grade 5 to current (nearing end of grade 11). They're coming off in a few months though.

Cold things on aching teeth only temporarily makes it feel good. 10 seconds later they hurt even more.

I honestly feel sorry for people having to deal with braces when there are better alternatives such as Invisalign. They were a much better option for me than the metal alternative. I wonder why more people don't look into / get this option. I'm guessing it probably has to do with cost/insurance coverage though.

I was told they don't work as well and one has to wear them longer. Also, with Invisalign, one is able to remove them at will, and if it starts hurting, I might do that.
