Braces: How am I suppose to eat?

Recommended Posts

I honestly feel sorry for people having to deal with braces when there are better alternatives such as Invisalign. They were a much better option for me than the metal alternative.  I wonder why more people don't look into / get this option. I'm guessing it probably has to do with cost/insurance coverage though.

ii couldnt use invisi cause i had bite problems and they dont work for that.

ive had braces TWICE now and am taking them off for the second time in a month.il tell you, the first weeks suck major ass. get some just add water ramen soup from a wholesale store. i was eating about 30 cups a week. i would swallow the noodles whole cause i couldnt chew them from all the pain. i had it worse though because they put plastic things on my teeth that wouldnt let me close my mouth the whole way and i couldnt chew with my back teeth either. you have to learn how to suck food out of the brackets. youll get used to it with time. just make a vacume by closing your lips and somehow concentrate all the sucking energy on one brace with your toung and suck. its hard to explain, but it becomes instinct after a while. i bnever eat apples anyway, but ive been able to eat steak and simialir foods without problems. gum is ok, but make sure you use a brand that dosent stick to the metal. wrigleys works, as do most others.

heres something that ****es me off about my orthodontistt:

they bought a bunch of macs. im not anti-mac or anything but do you really need a 1500 dollar imac to write how much my teeth suck? but thats not the worst of it. the imacs i can live with. what really gets to me is the G5. its sitting in the waiting room. it dosent have a mouse or a keyboard. it just sits there and plays a screensaver. a G5 with a 23" cinema display, worth about 5 grand, to play a screensaver all day. ill trade them my 3 year old compaq with xp on it. its not like it cant play a screensaver. it jsut makes me cry when i see it, all that power, wasted. all that beauty, jsut sitting under a desk. when i pay an arm and a leg and sign over my future first-born to them, i dont want them to spend my money on a friggen G5, i want them to make my teeth straight.

After a while, you can get the food out with your toung.

yeah, thats what i do. sometimes i rinse with water. :\

eating shouldnt be that hard after a while. why do you chew with your front teeth anyway? i thought they were only used for biting.

DUDE seriosuly I am about to get mine off.

BEST ADVICE: Wait 3 weeks. It will be totally normal by then! Eat regularly--if you can't chew, eat yogurt--Yoplait puts out good stuff. Bananas are also good. Jell-o is umm...sugary and it's bad for you.

WAIT 3 WEEKS. PM me or post here! I'm interested in how it goes.

Just went to the dentist tuesday they told me I have to get braces, so now I'm all worried :s, Seems my wisdom tooth messed up my whole bottom teeth I can just feel them start to overlap each other...

About on average how long do you have to have braces on and anyone have those clear ones? because I just know those metal ones will cause me to get soars in my mouth :s

I think the average is around 2 years..... thats what I had mine for at least.....

Don't fear the metal braces.......they aren't as bad as you would think ;)

You'll become a pro at getting food out of your braces with your tounge (among other things ;) )

It just takes time and practice, after four years you won't even notice they're there

Just got mine off last summer, now I wear one of those clear retainers when I go to sleep, so my teeth don't revert back, and I waste the money & pain I went through, don't care much about my parents money, but damn the pain was horrendous!

Probably been said before, After a few days the awkwardness and pain will go away and you will be able to eat normally again, lay off the hard and sticky foods.

After your monthly tuneups the pain will subside quicker. and when you get them off it will be weird as hell again.

I had em for a year to the month... Got em off the day after halloween..imagine the joy!

Sucks if you need your jaw widened or something, that **** hurts.

i had em, its not bad just eat normally... gets to be a pain, but the longer you have them in, the more you get used to it!

Yea, I currently have braces...But I get the off in a few months...

It sucks the first couple of weeks, just eat stuff that you can slurp down rather than chewwing...Like Jello, Mashed Potatoes, stuff like that.

You'll get used to it.

Ugh. I've been eating apple sauce, yogurt, soup, and chef boyardee for the past couple days. Ramen noodles are out cause they're so hard to chew. And when I slurp it down, I choke. The soreness is starting to get better and I can bite a little easier, but it still hurts. But what gets me more is the rubbing against my cheeks and lips. It's destroying my lips and cutting it up like crazy. How am I suppose to prevent that? Also, the rubbing against my cheeks hurts too...

I don't have braces although dentist have recommended me to put it in due to improper teeth grow. My gf has one and first weeks of putting braces in, she felt uncomfortable and pain when eating. But after months of use she got used to it. Sounds scary to me, I just don't wanna put braces :x :x

I ate just about everything... most things you can break apart before eating.. like brownies... if you break them into small pieces as you eat them it is easier.... if you bite into a brownie, you will have it all in your braces for sure... in fact... I got so used to breaking food apart... I still do it sometimes..

I have braces, they hurt everytime they change the wire, but it takes about 3-4 days to calm down after each change, was a week when they 1st put it in. Take a painkiller, and just brush your teeth!!!

About your front teeth, thats prolly what they are sorting out so it will get easier over a period of time :)

Good luck :D

And have fun lol :p

You were supposed to get a stick of wax (at least, I think it's wax) to rub on the braces if they start cutting you up.

I used to have them, your lips will toughen up and you wont be cut by them at all.

I always break up my sandwiches still, braces rule. If you need them, get them.

you'll regret it later on in life when you have a big ugly mouth that you could have fixed.

the worst part is retainers, cleaning them and trying to get the stink off (and the bubblegum). :)

After about 2 weeks you really get used to them dont realise their there. I just got my braces off couple weeks ago , after enduring 16 months of it and the results are fab, it'll all be worth it in the end
