what windows is installed on it best?

Windows 2000 or Windows XP if a lot the visual features were removed or disabled. Windows XP runs fine on 128MB ram if you remove some of the features. Messed with a machine that was 850Mhz/128MB ram and ran Windows XP home with the 'new' style enabled and most visual features, it was still slow at times.

you could probably get away with 2k for basic stuff, don't expect it to perform too well.

but personally i'd lean to 98se or a memory upgrade

Well, I've seen Windows XP run on a 128MB system fine, it's a great OS in general, so is Windows 2000. Windows 98 will not be supported soon anyways for support and updates?

when xp came out alot of systems still sold with 128 mb or ram -> and so have low budget systems ever since. however, i'd go with windows 2000 personally.

indeed, XP and 2K will *run* on 128meg memory, but say, if you use firefox, that's 20-50megs ram used, and then there's that windows will be using about 50 megs.

it all adds up very quickly.

given that 2k/xp are designed for 256meg + memory really, the computer's paging file will be getting a thrashing too.

98se however, while unsupported, is still a nice little, stable OS that's designed more for the 128meg ram

haha 128 memory... hehe

/on topic: I have a pentium 3 300mhz computer running 2k pro with sp4 in my garage, using it as a file/proxy server. It's running winproxy 5.1d, radmin, and has only 128MB of ram as well. IT performs flawlessly, and is fast too. Paging file is hardly ever accessed, i can sit out there and watch it, hardly any disk activity. The only time the disk gets accessed is when the caching server feeds files out to my network when cached pages are requested. I love having a caching server.

Anyway, it'll run fine, hell if 2k runs fine on my 300mhz server, it'll run fine on whatever you got.

Your best option is to use a current Windows platform (2k/XP), and remove as much of the fluff (visual effects, services, etc.) as possible.

You do *not* want to use Win98, as security will be your biggest concern.

Pssst...

There is no such thing as a P3 300, I think you mean P2 300. ;)

But, ontopic, I'd personally run Windows 98 or just go ahead and slap in another 128/256 and load up the XP Goodness. :)

I got a computer running Windows XP with one hundred and twentyeight(128) of RAM. Works like a charm! ;)

Same here. It even is a Pentium 2 with a speed of two-hundred (200) megahertz!

Windows 2000 is the easiest chocie.

Windows XP would be my choice but then I'd be prepared to disable much of the eye-candy.

Depending on the system, Windows 2000 should run decent. However, memory is not the only consideration. If you have slow hard drives, you're going to curse the day you decided to use anything but Windows 98 or the like.

Unless you are into really heavy Disk I/O apps, the drive speed isn't going to matter much.
