Is neowin having problems?

Recommended Posts

Not trying to be a jerk when I ask this, but I was wondering do you all get problems with the Neowin site here lately? I mean like forums taking a long time to load up when you first go into them, or your posts not refreshing back to the page after you submit them? Also, I get the Server is Busy message a lot too. I am being sincere in posting and asking if this is a problem for everyone. I really didn't know what was up, but it seems to be a lot more frequent in the past couple of months. Thanks for any input.

Mods, is this something that has been adressed that I just didn't know about or what? Are the issues on your end or ours? Thanks!

The server is getting slammed. We used ot have 300 active users at one time, and now we are almost always over 500, many times being over 700 active users. That is a lot of stress on the server. The guys who take care of the server are doing what they can, but I can really not give any information out about anything because it isn't my place to do so. I just ask that you try to bear with us, and, if getting a server is busy message, don't keep hitting refresh, please. Come back in a few minutes and try again.

I dont know what we can pinpoint it on - we have excellent longhorn coverage for 1; asides from that we have the forums which are great, and all the other news....

Yeah, the news and longhorn coverage is really interesting.

I have been receiving a server busy message a few times but never lasts too long. :) Are you going to be doing something about this increase in members/users? Upgrade the server or something?

Do you realize how powerful our server is already? The simple fact is, forum software is a heavy load for a server and having 700 people browsing at one time, really puts an extreme load on the server.

well, let us know if anything we can do to help (donations, etc)...I do not know much about how hard the load is hitting the server or anything, but I will take the advice and just deal with it. I just didn't know of there were plans to upgrade or anything, I know it is expensive already, I just didn't know what the plans were, expecially considering this site is only going to grow more and more.

The best thing you can do is to be patient and, like I said, not refresh over and over again to try to get rid of the server is busy messages. That only puts more load on the server when you have so many people reloading the page nonstop.

We are aware of the problem and we're working on it. As always :)

I haven't been getting any errors here lately. :)

One thing, that i have my members do at RCT2Temple is if the server gets too busy, just report the time date and the information at the bottom of the page: [ Script Execution time: 0.0245 ] [ 14 queries used ] [ GZIP Enabled ] [ Server Load: 3.95 ] by e-mail to me.

It hels out quite a bit to determine when and what might be causing it.

Way to block the ads, surely that helps them :p

Why not increase the posts per page setting in your control panel so it is higher, that way you will have more posts to read in one page and won't query the server every time for each small page. Therefore, the delay between queries as well as the number of queries required will be decreased. Turning off signatures/avatars might have an effect aswell.

Just a thought

Turning off Avatars, signatures, and making the posts per page about 40 or 50 will most certainly decrease the load and increase the speed on the user end, thus lower bandwidth usage.

Currently the admins/founders of neowin did a good choice of turning off the show users in forums and topics. That saved two SQL queries, which is a lot for a board this size. Plus too, i see that their CSS page is optimized and the HTML is fully compressed. :)

Though i reccomend one of the admins to make the CSS stylesheet external, that'll save quite a bit of bandwidth and a faster page load. :)

Yeah, i was wondering a few days ago if that was why they turned off the "who's browsing" the topic.

I'm going to change the amount of posts per page in my Control Panel if there's an option. :)

At least you're on IPB, they don't seem to have a high server load as vBulletin but maybe just more than phpbb?

Just curious, why did you decide to use IPB? :|

Thanks
