Knight'
After reading a few of these so called "reviews" I became aware of the fact that none of them actually review these products against anything else. It's not the members fault, who here has the money to buy two competing products just for the sake of a review? Not many I would imagine. Of course, people can comment on their own brand loyalty based on previous experiences with other products they've bought. But this is not a fair system to actually build reviews on? Personal bias, brand loyalty and the fact that there is no fair contrast between other similar products on the market do not make a compelling read of a review. Unless this changes Neowins review system will be nothing more than "Look how good this is !!!!!11111oneone!!!! ", does this really need to be plastered on our front page or is Neowins standards slipping even further as we become just "another relay site full of spammers and teens"? :ninja:
Toxicfume Veteran Posted May 30, 2004 Veteran Share Posted May 30, 2004 You can't say you don't learn more about something from these reviews before you decide to purchase them.
noir
I kind of agree, I don't think I've read one single review that concluded that the product wasn't worth a purchase.
bangbang023 Veteran Posted May 30, 2004 Veteran Share Posted May 30, 2004 The point is, most members are only reviewing things they enjoy. They don't get paid to do it, so they get the privilege of only reviewing the better stuff. To say it's stupid, is offensive to anyone who has written even a half way decent review. Frank
If you read MOST reviews on the internet, they don't compare them to something else. They test the product and they give their opinion on the product. Of course 95% of the members are going to recommend to purchase the product. They more then likely do some review on the product before they buy it, and decide that they want the product before they buy it Do you have enough money to buy something you don't like? If you do, be my guest, and then you can post a review on it. If I did not have a job, I might just go to BestBuy and buy random things, review them, and then return them, but this would be dishonest.

If you buy a electronic gadget of some sort that you didn't like you'd probably return it, but that doesn't mean you still couldn't do a review of the item. I'm sure many people have done bad purchases as well.
Projectile Vomit Chick
I like the reviews. So what if they're a bit one sided. It enables me to learn about the product. I can do my own comparisons. Keep up the good work! (Y)
Knight'
To say it's stupid, is offensive to anyone who has written even a half way decent review. Offensive? I think not? Anyone who takes this personally, then it wasn't intended I assure you all. Merely I was pointing out that a large majority of reviews give one sided, bias reviews. I have mentioned twice now that this is not the fault of the members, just the lack of expendable income. The concept of a member review system is too idealistic, and although I'm not against idealism, it doesn't appear to be working well in this forum to give good reviews. By all means stick with your review system if you wish, but don't flame me for pointing out the obvious.
matt74441
The thing is if you start doing reviews that take two products, that thread will just become a flame fest. I was considering doing a VIA vs nForce review after I bought my NF7-S, but thats all I would do, I would start a flame war.

Keep up the good work! (Y) Why not rename it to: "Cool hardware I've bought" forum? That way there will be no question of what you're about to read, a nice guide to how good x product is. bangbang023 Veteran Posted May 30, 2004 Veteran Share Posted May 30, 2004 So don't read them, simple as that. I enjoy reading them and seeing what people think about a product. There are members, like warwagon, who put a lot of hard work into their reviews and, in turn, contribute alot to the community.

Ahh this is a common attitude amongst the mods on Neowin, "don't read them". Just like the thousands of "I've got x amount of post threads" the useless "Post your ...." and the general spamming of the boards. "Don't read them" he says. Where does that get you? Just a forum full of crap which nobody reads. Is this the forum you want bangbang?
Frank
Do you like repeating me, or are you struggling to read? Yes I did "struggle to read it". When you post a huge glob of words in a thread it makes it kind of hard to understand without reading over and over. If you don't like it, don't read it. I don't see how it is "lowering neowin's standards" or "Showing the rest of the internet that Neowin is full of teens".

Those threads are commonly found in the General Discussion area where things can be OT from the tech scene as long as they are not utterly useless. If someone were to post a "Look how cool my winamp positioned into the side of my desktop!" thread in Software D&A, I would have removed it in a hearbeat. As far as the review is concerned, thank you for commenting. There isn't much that we can do as long as it's a volunteer-based system :/
RadishTM Veteran Posted May 30, 2004 Veteran Share Posted May 30, 2004 Is the concept of not reading a review if it doesn't interest you that hard to master Knight' ? If you didn't read the review, we would haven't to read this thread - and I see you to be the only person complaining. Do you understand what a "review" is?, it's a personal opinion/views of a product used in question. You seem to be going on about product comparison - which the forum is not specifically catered for but not just limited to reviews since members often don't have two things to compare. People who do review things for free to benefit others outranks the "forum full of crap" your going on about by a large margin - our front page reflects that. Oh and we're not a relay site for spammers/teens, we have a bit more respect and the staff do a damn good job keeping us above the rest. Radish?
