threetonesun
The only point I can agree with you on is that they seem a little too one sided. I often visit the Harmony-Central user reviews for guitars/amps and very often you'll find users who just bought a $2000 guitar willing to give it a 7/10. While features lists and pictures are great, especially if it's something that's hard to find documentation on, I really want to know why something doesn't work more than why it does. ....
I'm not saying he isn't entitled...he is....but I'm just saying that other people find it useful. If he doesn't...don't go in there.
dL
This is just something to spice up Neowin, and motivate members to write reviews :ninja: you don't have to read it if you don't. Dude, i dun think anyone or any site in the world can serve everybody in the world perfectly. There are always stuff that people won't like, if you don't, then don't go. Plain simple. dL
Knight'
Don't forget the fact that these reviews are done by amateurs. We can encourage them to take their articles to certain directions, but it's really up to them at the end of the day. I suggest a sticky in that forum, which entails guidelines of howto make good reviews. Also, encourage other people who have bought other products which serve the same function to construct a logical and as un-biased as humanly possible debate to establish which is the best product to use. A change in emphasis if you will, from the traditional "here's a review and say how good it is" approach? Obviously this would require more work for the mods, but I'm sure you're up to the job :) idealistic I know.... I'm such a hypocrite :D
RadishTM Veteran Posted May 30, 2004 Veteran Share Posted May 30, 2004 Review:To go over and examine critically or deliberately. Specifically: To go over with critical examination, in order to discover exellences or defects; hence, to write a critical notice of; as, to review a new novel. http://www.hyperdictionary.com/search.aspx?define=review T'is exactly what my angle was, the reviews are not criticle and are full of "personal opinion/views of a product" (exactly not what a review is). While that same link you provided says - [v] look back upon (a period of time, sequence of events, etc.); remember; "she reviewed her achievements with pride" = Indeed, this is one of the main reasons for a review. & [n] a summary at the end that repeats the substance of a longer discussion = Members post their pros/cons of their product at the end of the thread. Knight'
Draft Guidelines: things to include in your review to make it better. During your review try to make it as fair as possible by: ? The review needs to highlight both the good and bad points of the product, a rating out of ten (ten being the highest) is also a good idea (though not mandatory). ? There should be references to other available products currently on the market, Highlight why you chose this product over the other products on the market. ? Do other products excel where your product fails? ? Cite other sources which review the same product, so the readers? can have a balance of opinions on the given product. ? If there are new revisions of the same product in the pipeline, future price cuts, or any other compelling reason to buy the product in the future mention these too. If applicable, mention these too for other competing products. ? Conclude with a balanced and reasoned arguement why the readers' should or shouldn't buy the product. Provide the readers? with the following to make it as informative as possible. ? Provide technical specifications of the product, and how you think they have faired in real world conditions. ? Link to the manufactures website. ? Provide pictures of the product. ? Provide any other information you have learned in your experience of the product, firmware updates etc and bugs you?ve found. ? If applicable, provide information of the ease of installation of the hardware/software. ? Comment on the design of the product, o (Hardware) build quality, functionality and aesthetics o (Software) stability, functionality and user interface. ? Price of the product (and competing products), shipping times you have experienced. Provide the readers? with useful information which they may need if they so choose to purchase the reviewed product. ? Where to get the best price of the product. ? Where to find any information you needed with your experience of the product. ? Any other useful information the readers' may need. For members wishing to participate in a debate over which product is better, try and include the following: ? Provide insightful comments on a competing product you own or have experience with, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of this product over the reviewed product. All the Neowin rules apply, avoid flaming at all costs. ? Provide links to other websites that backup your claims, and technical specifications. ? Price/performance issues? ? Bugs with the reviewed product which haven?t been highlighted? Mention these too. Edited May 30, 2004 by Knight'

altezza Veteran Posted May 31, 2004 Veteran Share Posted May 31, 2004 Sometimes I like to hear reviews from users. They might have reviews on something I've been looking so however it is good to hear what the users opinions. At least there are pros and cons before my final decision can be made.
