sdb815
Apple did it. Granted they don't support as much hard/software as Windows, but it can be done. I think most people would agree that MS should rewrite Windows from scratch. I'm willing to bet that most home users don't need decade old backwards compatibility. More people are using Windows XP now than Windows 98 which should be a signal to MS that it's time for a complete rewrite. One can only dream of such a day... Isn't Longhorn a re-write? :D Plus, Apple stood on the shoulder of giants, and put Darwin on top of BSD. (nice job of an OS, but they didn't do all the work themselves). Linux is close to a re-write of Minix from scratch, but it is just now starting to get ready for "the desktop" (depending on your definition of that). There is a lot of work on the hardware integration end for Linux, as Microsoft has a golden touch in this (the hardware vendors write their own code). Linux isn't popular enough for hadrware manufacturers to start doing this to a significant degree yet.
Storm
why the hell would ms move to poo-nix? MS developed nt and 9x and they should and will stick to what they made
[jon]
I'm amused by how off-topic this has got, started with minor Windows annoyances, now we're onto Unix vs Windows, not that I mind (Y)... Personally, I prefer *NIX for serving, but i havent got to the level of commitment where I'll format my windows partition for *NIX ;) Regards

Rudy
Dream time is nearing the end. Isn't Longhorn a re-write? :D no its not....but thats what they should have done....the only problem is that i can picture the chaos that would cause, every dumb user wondering why their DOS apps are not working.....even though there's a better Windows alternative..... I mean when MS released WinXP lots of people whined about it and went back to 98....i really dont understand why they're so attached to this pos that crashes all the time

Aeonandromere
Hmmmm I didnt think id throw this whole post into a UNIX vs. NT debate, I was merely stating an opinion / concept... Im still in favor of Microsoft using either UNIX or re-building a new core from ground up.... MSA (Microsoft Architecture) could be its name (sounds better than New Technology [NT]). Riz360
ooh, I like where this thread is heading.... I present to you.....MY RANT: Damn filesharing is problematic, sometimes it works, sometimes it decided that it wont! This is why I have Fedora Core 2, WHICH ROCKS! que the rocking icon: :punk: WOO! still does'nt fix the file sharing problem but is a lot better OS on the whole....IMO!!!!!! IMO!!!!! Just incase I get flamed. The only reason I am forced to use Windows is because of the folowing: - Games such as Counter Strike (I working on it with wine) - Compatibility and wide range of appliactions available for Windose (hoo hoo I feel so clever) only. Eh, hopefully people will start to recognise and take linux more seriously in the future and this problem will be wiped out. Im still a linux n00b, but Im getting there, almost free of my Microsoft constraints. I dont hate Microsoft exactly I just think that a little variety is good, and that we shouldnt all be so reliant and hopelessly dependant on one Operating system alone.... fin.
