For Windows you need a Microsoft certification, get MCP, MCSE, maybe MCSA for administration and work your way up to an MVP (if your really good... and really lucky)

For networking get a CCNA from Cisco...

Of course the most important thing is work experience - start low-paid maybe working for a company, work your way up and then maybe go solo or whatever you intend to do.

It really depends on what kind of computer tech you mean. If you mean someone who fixes hardware and software (which is what I think you mean), start with A+ certification. Then, you can go from there to get other certs if you want.

You'll need to study some more and it depends what you want to specialise in.

If you want to concentrate on networking than a Cisco certification and a MCSE in Win2k Server or CNA for Novell / or get Redhat Certified (Y).

If you want to concentrate on desktop support then a MCP in Windows XP as well as an A+ Certification in Electronics may be good to have under your belt.

Other than that, just turn up at your local computer store and ask for a job. Learn as you go and remember to think twice before connecting that 12Volt connector backwards. That's going to cost you. :$

Good luck!

Actually, you often find that larger companies look for people who demonstrate a keenness and ability to learn computer related issues fast, know a lot but don't have the qualifications (necessarily). Then you will be trained up, put in for certification and not bear the costs.
