BananaMan
Hey everyone, I've noticed within the past couple of weeks that a new change has been implemented where attached images that exceed a certain resolution are turned into thumbnails. The feature itself is really clever and it's usefulness is clearly apparent, however, whatever is used to resize the images make them look terrible (probably just my browser), unreadable in the instance where text is on the attached image. Does IPB have an option that allows users are able to turn it off? It's a real pain in the rear to have to click on an attached image when you want to see it. Cheers! OPaul
It's not just you, the image is just compressed.
Tim Dorr Veteran Posted June 6, 2004 Veteran Share Posted June 6, 2004 IPB 2.0 will do a fully resampled resize and actually send a smaller version of the image. For now, this is a temporary solution.

Okie dokie. Good enough for me. Thanks for the prompt reply. (Y)
Wannes
but once you click it everything is fine. :)
BananaMan
,Jun 6 2004, 17:39] but once you click it everything is fine. :) I know. I just felt it unnecessary inconvenience to have to do that to every attached image that you wish to see. It's especially frustrating on dialup (28.8k due to poor phone lines). I'll just wait patiently for IPB 2.0. :)
Wannes
i requested the thumbnail feature to stop the tables fro expanding too much. thumbnails atm still fully load the image and when you click them it will only be a matter of seconds before you see the image. the thumbnail resized the image, it doesnt cut down it's file size or loading time. BananaMan
,Jun 6 2004, 18:33] i requested the thumbnail feature to stop the tables fro expanding too much. And it's a great thing you showed the initiative to request the feature. Really! :) I like the idea of the feature, just right now the thumbnails are only vaguely indicative of the attached image due to poor quality. thumbnails atm still fully load the image and when you click them it will only be a matter of seconds before you see the image. the thumbnail resized the image, it doesnt cut down it's file size or loading time. It doesn't for me! It reloads the image all over again! I'm using Firefox, btw. EDIT: Same problem in IE.
Frank
The thumbnails work fine here in IE. I click on them, and they open up in the size they were meant to be.
Banzai
I think its better, if you have full sized images the skins starts to go mad.
Fred Derf Veteran Posted June 7, 2004 Veteran Share Posted June 7, 2004 It doesn't for me! It reloads the image all over again! I'm using Firefox, btw.EDIT: Same problem in IE. If you wait for the page that contains the preview (we can't really call it a thumbnail, can we?) to fully load and then you click on the preview the it shouldn't have to redownload the image. I'm not on dial-up though so maybe it just seems to do that. I really don't have issues with the preview quality. It's enough to give you an idea about whether it's worth clicking or not. I really like the fact that the tables don't get all stretched out of proportion now.
ozgeek
Neowin's going to update to IB2? Sweet! :o

I'm not on dial-up though so maybe it just seems to do that. I do wait for the image to completely load before opening it up, so the problem doesn't lie there. Perhaps broadband is giving off the illusion that it's just loading it from cache because your connection is so fast. I'm unfortunately stuck cruisin' the 28.8k superhighway right now due to phone line problems (that thank god, will be rectified in the next few months which means I can finally get cable/ADSL). Don't worry about it people. I'm satisfied that this problem won't be here to stay.
Wannes
Neowin's going to update to IB2? Sweet! :o of course they will, they have to be up to date but this will take a while. a few reasons would be that the software has to go final and a lot of conversions have to be made. ;) as for the thumbnails bananamen, that's very weird. timdorr explained a while back that the images fully load but then shrink in size so the tables dont get messed up. once you click them they will show the real size in a new window without the loading, do make sure you wait forthe page to fully load. BananaMan
,Jun 7 2004, 22:23] hmm ill look into this. :) You won't see me trying to stop you, but don't feel obliged to assist because you instigated this change (if that's influencing your decision at all). I don't browse a lot of threads where large attached images are common-place (desktops thread make my poor modem squeal like a pinned down guinea pig), so it's not that big of an issue for me, especially since this is a temporary problem. I made this thread to raise a concern, and those concerns have been put to rest. ;) Strange though, that I am the only one experiencing this phenomena, at both work and home. Wouldn't have anything to do with the IB theme I'm using would it (Neowin Lite)?
sfalcon
Offsite embedded images still screw w/the wrap. :(
Bearded Kirklander
I noticed that if you turn images and smiles off, the thumbnails still appear. Is that supposed to happen? Or are they supposed to also not show up when you turn off images and smiles? By the way, I think it would be a great feature if you allowed people to toggle on smiles without having to toggle on images. That way if I was browsing at lunch or something I would not have to worry about images showing up and drawing attention to my screen, but I could still see the smiles so it would make sense what emotions people are trying to convey. Thanks.
