Tonight, I start "The Mac Fund."

Recommended Posts

Lately I've been playing around with PearPC. The emulation is very nice, and has given me an opportunity to appreciate the thoughtful design of the Mac operating system. I would like to buy a Macintosh, but don't have the cash for it. Yet.

So as I finished a computer repair job tonight, the customer handed me the money and I got to thinking: why not start a fund for my future Macintosh? So I dropped the $$$ into a jar and branded the Apple logo on the lid. Below the logo I have written "The Mac Fund."

I am having a tough time deciding between the PowerBook or a PowerMac. As a PC user for 13 years, I am totally comfortable with major hardware upgrades. I like the desktop format because you can get much cheaper components, and they all run faster than their laptop counterparts. Take hard drives, for example: a 7200RPM hard drive isn't that expensive these days, and it's a lot quicker than a 4200RPM drive usually found in laptops. But I will be going back to school, and may want to use the laptop for presentations or watching a movie somewhere with friends. I also want to upgrade the Mac in the future with more RAM and/or additional hard drives.

My plans for my future Macintosh are everything except gaming. I'll still have my hot-rod PC for that.

In this thread, please share with me your experiences with Macintosh and whether you think I should get a Powerbook, iBook, or PowerMac. I will only be looking at G4's, because they are the most cost-effective solution at this time. G3's suck, and G5's are too new.

VVV oh hello rumbleph1sh! :D

With MS signing deals with the devil (namely the music industry) I think you're making a wise decision switching to mac's before the day where we can't even click the start button without needing a fingerprint, or having our personal information and files sent over the internet to be put on somebody's records.

Best of luck. Let us know how you like macs because I for one and considering making the switch as well.

Since you have a "hot-rod" PC why are you even buying a new computer? I'm just curious. It's also info that could better help the NeoWinners help you decide.

so I've been told. But my beliefs are such that alcohol, cigarettes, and illegal drugs are harmful to the body. I try to respect the body that God gave me by keeping it clean.

I don't mean to turn this into a religious discussion--although, ironically, we are talking about Macintosh, which is just a shorthand name for the Church of Steve Jobs...

imtoomuch came out of the closet to say:

I won't be buying a new mac. It'll probably be a used G4 from eBay, or some multimedia company that is upgrading their fleet of G4's. I'll take whatever I can get, but it has to be a G4 with a reasonably fast clock speed. I can always upgrade the memory and hard disk later.

My buddy has a powerbook, I personally was never into macs all that much, being an all time PC user.. but I am in love with macs now, I want my own powerbook. But I will not be seeing anything like that for along time... I already my own laptop that I purchased in september of 2003 for $2000 which is very very nice but still is not a powerbook, but still good, lol.

I highly recommend the powerbook, you said things about school and you already have a rig for gaming and what not, so get the powerbook, you would be investing in a great laptop especially by apple. Great support too. Not sure what else to say, good luck with it if you choose to get it.
