"I've never encountered one who wanted to hide the codes written by him." A programmer said, adding that "all programmers are proud with the codes written by themselves, hoping to show off their ability to others. If the code of a programmer's has been adopted by others, he might feel a great pride. Only his boss worries about the copyright of the program."

Sounds true, but could be wrong aswell (trying to cover my tracks :D), but not for all devs (e.g. independent, they got to make a living somehow)

That's not true..

not everyone is the same and wants to "show off"

some don't want others to "steal" there code...

that depends on every user...

it's neither truth nor a lie... it's an opinion.

its not an opinion, he's saying ALL programmers want to show off their code

 I don't mind sharing my QBasic programs, if someone wanted them .... except the ones that make me money. :shifty:

My code works, but most of the time it is dirty as hell and undocumented.... so I think it is better is nobody sees it ;)

I don't like showing my code, but if I'm done with a project and I know I'm not going to work on it further I just post all my source code because I know a lot of people need source code to learn, that's how I started off

Could not agree more.

Some ppl like to show off their code. For example me, i like to share my code if it's gonna help someone else. What absolutely ****es me off is someone else taking my code and showing it off as theirs without even making the slightest change to it.

I dont mind sharing all of my code. I like showing off a really tight optimised piece of code. when I see someone thats done it better tho my pride gets hurt lol

It depends.

I don't think its at all about the showing off, but the fact that you can contribute your work and accomplish something. For something like the allegro game programming lib, i would get enjoyment out of improving something that all kinds of people use from beginners to more advanced opengl coders.

If its a larger project that i make money off of, i probably wouldn't open source it. Well, maybe parts of it would but not all of it.

If its an embedded system I probably wouldn't OSS it as there isn't much point. If i'm making money off of it it would be an even harder sell. But if for example, i was using an OSS code base such as linux, i would definently submit any bug patches, or speed hacks i made even if i'm not selling the device.

In the acadmic world, proffessors open source their work all the time in a manner of speaking by publishing reports and everything. But often they will patent techniques and such to reap the rewards. There is nothing wrong with that at all. You give a little and take a little.
