But, as someone mentioned earlier, I think taking their computer over to your place, backing up all they're data, formatting it and then re-installing Home and using a mixture of suggestions that have been on this thread, not to mention whacking a password on the BIOS and change the boot order so he can't boot from the floppy to use the password decrypter for XP (I don't remember seeing anyone saying that, if I have, sorry!). You'll probably end up making their computer a lot more stable and faster too, because I'm guessing they probably installed it themselves over Me or something or possibly bought it from a big computer chain with all the spam with it.

Good luck!

They got it from Sony... I had to come over when they first got it to "clean it out" so to speak. But you're right... and I agree totally with what everyone on here says. I swear... if it was *my* kid, he'd be in jail right now... maybe I'm harsh, but he really deserves it in my mind.

Yeah I agree with BananaMan, the computer issue is a low priority on disciplining this kid. Plus if he's clearing history logs etc then he's obviously hiding something he SHOULDNT be doing on that computer.. Key logging is a viable option, it he jacked their credit card and ordered things online he could easily get something like:

http://www.keykatcher.com/howit.htm

Also theres the posibility that he has a friend who knows his way around computer that does some dirty work for him while his parents are gone?

About locking credit cards and computer(part(s) up, that really isnt a solution because a kid like that will (and has from what i've read) learn to pick locks and circumvent those measures rather quickly.

Bios boot password is the best bet I'd say... Hope my input helps ^^

PS: Maybe his parents should slip a healthy dose of Diazapam into his froot-loops every morning... :ponder:

if i was determined to get on my pc a bios protection would work for about 23 hrs! cause on the 24 hr i would take the case off find the bios jumpers! and slip them off just long enough so that it resets and i can go about my business!

My advice is a total lock down! from the pc this kid doesnt deserve it! and his parents are raising him to be a brat!

i would kick his ass then feed him to the dogs but maybe thats just to mean.... Anyways the point being the kids out of control with credit cards and PORN!! at a young age.. thats also crap

he needs some mental help and i would be the first to put my fist where it belongs.....

I think he's screwed up because his real dad ain't in the picture, and there's a story behind that I am sure.

If she doesn't use the CC for web purchases tell the CC company to block them, or at least tell them to block the porn ****.

An easy alternative is to use the modem (if it's something like DSL or Cable) in the usb mode, when she leaves, just unplug it and take it with you, and since it's usb she can leave the comp on and plug it right back in and go, especially if they have a Dell or Compaq etc with the front USB ports.

This would work the same with the keyboard or mouse, but the modem would have a bigger impact, and they are a bit harder to just go out and get.

yea true, and also, i dont think he would know how 2 re-install new drivers, setup a new internet connection 2 go with the modem he buys, unless he buys the same 1!

but if you have an internal modem, you got a prob there...

a better idea is to go to the device manager, and disable the device each time she leaves, and when she comes back, enable it again

Well, I can tell you what I know. I did live with them for about 6 months when I was between jobs (this was about a year or so ago)... they didn't treat him any different than most parents treat their kids. They didn't beat him or really anything. The kid doesn't know his real father (his mother had him at like 15 and the fater was the same age) cause he bailed when his mom got pregnant. As far as having something against his step-father... he might, but that's only cause his step-father is usually the one to dish out punishments. As far as other things. When I was there with them he stole a lot of things from me during the first month. I ended up having to go buy a lock for my door to keep him out. I eventually got it all back, with the exception of 1 cd case and a japanese import cd.

To answer what you guys were saying... they do have an external cable modem... but it goes along with the "too much work" policy. She believs she shouldn't have to do stuff like that in her own house.

Sometimes Jenny Jones or Jerry Springer have a show where hellish brats go on with their parents under false pretences and some big army guy or gal turns up and yells at them and tells them they're all going to boot camp. Can't you call Jerry or Jenny and get this obnoxious kid on one of the shows? ;)

The mother isn't helping stuff by being so reluctant to do anything about it. Essentially, she's just being lazy, repeatedly putting it off. What happens if the kid flips and tries to injure someone? If they want the kid to stop doing all this stuff, then they need to take active steps to prevent him from doing it, for example:

(a) buy a safe and put the PC's keyboard and mouse in during the day. Maybe the modem wires as well.

(b) BIOS password. Not foolproof but if he doesn't know about the reset jumper it might prevent him getting at the PC for a while.

© change the boot order - boot off the hard drive only. No CDs or floppies.

(d) Cancel their existing credit cards and get new ones with different numbers. Do what Christopher Walken did with the watch in Pulp Fiction and keep them up their asses ;).

(e) get you, their brainiac computer friend, to totally reinstall Windows, with lots of security.

(f) get one of those removable hard drive caddies. When the parents are about to go out, they take it out and stick it in the safe they bought, per point (a) above.

(g) turn the PC off when they've finished using it. They're just being lazy (again): it only takes a minute or so to boot up.

(h) get one of those "Net Nanny" type programs and install that.

They need to do something before the kid does something more serious than steal CC #s or surf for porn. Given his violent history, they could claim self-defense if the worst comes to the worst.... :ponder:

Hehe, good idea but like I said I really don't think taking big steps to secure the PC is the right angle for this. He'll probably just end up taking it and crushing it outside for fun.

Buy the kid some "adult" magazines. That way, he won't have to steal the credit cards and break into the computer. Atleast this way, you can control what he looks at so you don't have to worry about finding any beastiality and stuff like that.

;)

I have a solution "Boot Camp" :)

Anyway have her try chaning the password again. And dont use gay pw generators just use like a dictanory word and sum numbers... You can guess those and I am assuming he isnt some hacking geneous. Also my system takes about 20 secs to boot so a boot password wouldnt be that inconvientent. Also mabye that kid needs a girlfriend also ;)

i have the solution to your problem!!! just ignore it. give it another year and this kid will have robbed, shot or murdered someone and he'll be in jail for hte rest of his life or dead. this kid is nothing but trouble and has SERIOUS issues. the pc is the least of his parent's problems. failed twice, still getting horrible grades and has a step dad? hrm. broken home? big surprise.

this has been a fun thread to discuss the security of winXP and win2k but this is really really sad. he's breaking into his mother's room, stealing cards and just being a horrible kid. when i was a kid i would never consider touching parent's money b/c i respected and appreciated how hard they worked and what they did for me. damn. this is just sick. someone needs to intervene here and do something to help this kid straighten out otherwise he's destined to be a complete loser and a menace to society. :(

I agree with you 100%... I never would have done anything like that to my family. My theory is that he thinks he deserves it... ot at least it's how he acts. He's just recently gotten threatened by about 10 guys cause he was sayin' he slept with some girl that he didn't. I think one good a$$-whoopin' might fix a lot of the problem... I don't think he's ever had one. lol

Try that. It will limit the use of the computer unless the right password is installed. That way, you can let him use Word or whatnot, but block out Internet Explorer and stuff.

Many schools use it but be warned, its not *totally secure.

If her son is stealing her credit card information and hacking her computer when he don't even know what DLL's do, she should just take the power cord with her when she's not there.. or put the computer in its own room that has a padlock on it.

Theres no way to have "secure windows" when everyone knows that windows can be broken.

whatever she does, don't use password protected screensavers.. a simple hit of the restart key will make it work all better again. my friends mom did that to my friend when he got kicked out of school for a few days.. it was funny, he'd wake up, hit restart and go use the washroom, come back and use the computer for a while, then get off like 5 min before his mom came home.

Now that I read more of this post, I am curious.. Internet is his problem.. I think.. so if she has cable couldn't she get it locked out or take the modem with her when she leaves? A computer isn't very much this day in age without the internet... I suggust for her to back her important stuff up too, she might come home to see a black screen with a flashing white bar..

I like the way you think. haha As it is now, they've decided to stop saving him. The next time he gets himself in trouble with a kid who wants to mess him up, they've decided that they're not gonna step in. They think maybe a good beating will show him he's not as cool as he thinks he is.

I used to use screensaver passworded to keep people off my computer. It can be made very hard to get into if you just make a shortcut to startup and as soon as windows comes up it goes into screensaver, hit restart all u want or come up in safemode and it still starts the screen saver. Not the best but works pretty good. I would just drag blank screensaver to start menu then set password.
