Question about drowning

Recommended Posts

I go swimming every morning and can swim pretty very well. I was in the swimming club when I went to school so I learnt how to swim. It's also good excerise.

It is fairly easy to swim. When I was little, I was afraid of deep pools and had always used the wading pool. After a while, I decided to try out the deep pool and volia on that day, I could swim down to the deep end by pulling yourself along the edge for a while until you get used to the deepity of the pool.

I though human mind would come with the ability to swim. It's a natural thing. To see if you can float, lean back so that you float on your back, if your body floats, then you can, but if your body sinks, it take practise to learn how to float properly. Don't move too much, just thread gently, and you should be fine. :)

when I was about 4, I was at a pool, my cousin had gone over to the deepend, and I decided to follow her by clinging to the edge of the pool. got to the deepend, managed to slip, and went under. managed to thrash my way to the surface and grab the edge again, and after I caught my breath I was fine and worked my way back to the other end, don't remember anyone even noticing what had happened

oh well, obviously it didn't effect me too badly, now I love swimming and I'm even a certified scuba diver ^_^

You can lead a horse to water but you cant make him play polo?

My parents made me do swimming lessons as a kid and I HATED it! There was nothing worse than getting water in my eyes and up my nose

Later on when i was 9 or 10 friends and I started going to open swim all the time and I learned to really enjoy being in the water and to swim better...Later on in life I joined the swim team and now I love the water. I swim as often as I can and I intend to keep swimming as its the best excercize and its not hard on your body like alot of other sports are.

My recomendation to you is LEARN TO SWIM don't have anyone else around (except maybe a lifeguard just in case :shifty: ), just go into the shallow end of the pool and play around a bit...Once you get the feel of the water its like riding a bike, you just can and you'll never forget it.

One other thing...I could never swim butterfly...then one night i went home and had a dream about swimming fly. I tried it the next day and I could do it and now I'm DAMN good at it :D Its just one of those things...

Butterfly is extremely hard for me. yes I know I have to stretch out and pull, but I can't reach high enough out of the water. :pinch:

But I can do freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke with no problems. :)

If you werent expecting to be pushed into a pool then thats probably what the panic/shock was. If you had to jump in to save someone for example then you can prepare yourself more. Isnt it a known fact that some humans just cant swim theres nothing bad about it. Its just the way some of people are.

Dude everyone can swim... Simplying moving your arms will keep u a float.... It boggles my mind that some people can't swim... Staying "calm" shouldn't even be an issue... If you can't swim you need to leave your computer and go outside sometime....

that would be like saying everyone can ride a bike or everyone can skate. it's not right.

I was 9, I think, when I learned to swim and even today I am afraid of water. my grandpha tought my mom to swim by throwing her in water and saying if you want to survive, swim. she swam like a fish and was never afraid of water again.

people that cant swim tend to have been born/live in cities most of their life. or scared of water for other reasons.

but like they said, you tend to float naturally. slowly sweeping your arms helps too. good fun man. find the shallow end and play around with it. you'll be happy afterwards.

can't grasp the fact that someone can't swim.  you just move your arms and kick

Well if you dont know how to swim and you just move your legs and arms you will be tired very very quickly.

i guess if you just get someone to show you on land (the actions and stuff) i remember the first time i swam in holiday across a corner... i was sinking but i propelled myself, then i just did it again and again untill i got further across, then i did a length and i was like w00t (i was 5/6 at the time)

just for the record: doggy paddle rules, and butterfly is extreeeemely hard

you can throw a (really quite young, maybe 3 months old) baby into a pool and it will swim through total instinct... when it was more politically correct to nearly drown your kids in the name of practical experience and character building, this was done to teach your kids to swim (in the 60's & 70's). :)

damn, i can swim like a fish.

but if i was in that situation, i would kick like hell to get up.

btw, anyone heard that dane cook skit where he talks about pushing the kid in the pool and making the top of lite on fire?
