I don't smoke and therefore have never quit smoking, but aren't the images of what it's doing to your body enough to stop you from smoking? :)

Judging by his name and other posts I think he already does...

Okay, then when you aren't looking, have a friend replace all the ciggs in a pack with joints? :)

chew gum, or that nicorette gum. i chew my nails, big time and have done so ever since I was a kid (big proof of what a war can do to you) and I cannot stop chewing my nails; although if I chew gum, I find that I don't chew my nails as much.

nicotine patches seem to help some to quit. But it's a long process. Or a strong will?

Then again my dad went cold turkey 16 years ago and quit just like that, never smoked since.

I've recently stoped smoking myself.

I had quit countless times before that with no luck.

It lasted 2 days max.

I didn't care that really if it was messing up my health and the pictures weren't even a slight encouragement to make me want to stop.

But then I started noticing that once your around people that don't smoke in a lot of cases they either end up smoking if they are very close to you or they get second hand.

And I don't want to be responsible for killing people I love.

So that was one big point I had in favor of making me want to quit.

Other little things were cosmetic reasons such as getting yellow teeth and wrinkles but they were all reasons enough to add the why I should quit.

My point is you have to be very motivated to quit otherwise you will give in.

I've been off cigs for a few months now.

Longest I ever went without them since I had started smoking.

I still want them but I don't flip out anymore at least.

Maybe it's more of habit and convenience of having something that can calm you down easier in certain situations.

The patches didn't work even slightly for me.

I heard the gum doesn't work either.

I however, did hear that zyban works great.

I, myself did the cold turkey thing after realizing that using the other things were pointless since they didn't work so if I was going to do it I needed to do it right away before making it even harder then it would be.

How come it's hard to quit smoking? I thought it could be as easy as not to buy any cigerattes. No, I never smoke and never will but I am wondering why people are having problems quitting. :/

i smoke. half a pack a day.

but im not really addicted, i can make it for a whole week (i live with my parents and theyd fuken smash my head if they found out, so when i stay at home i vaoid smoking).

the best way, and THE ONLY WAY, is that you just stop.

forget nicotine patches, filters and sht.

just throw them away, and realise that youre doing a good thing by that. donate the money you spend on cigarettes or spend them on something smart. eventually youll start feeling good.

its all about you will power.

as simple as that.

i suggest you try.

Ive kinda quit... i used to smoke 10 a day... now its like 3 a week. but thats cos i smoke on weekends... but still i feel its been very successful. Nicotene gum isnt that great, cos ull still hav the nicotene in your system, and plus is costs alot. Basically just find something to do instead, i started cos i was bored all the time anyway.

O yeh... i only smoke if i go out on weekends. if i dont go out, i dont smoke.

Yes you get addicted and then try to stop, I don't like the way people think it's easy to stop cause it sure as hell isn't!

Hmm...

I've quit twice, once for a year and just recently (about six months ago).

First time, I was smoking too much, close to a pack a day. I told myself, this is crazy, you have to stop. After not being able to quit the first time I told myself I was going to quit, I 'became angry' at my inability to control myself. That worked pretty good.

Its only the first three days that are hard. You just feel a little ****ty. After that, its all self-control.

Who is in control of you? Its amazing, but often you are not in control of yourself. Smoking illustrates this, especially quitting smoking.

I started back up gradually. All of my friends still smoked, I was always around it and told myself I'd be able to control myself.

I was largely sucessful, I typically only had between 4-6 a day for a few years. Then, last christmas I finally broke my wife down and we quit together. It was very easy (easier than most people would think, I suspect). We cheated once, a day after christmas while we were drinking. Just because we cheated didn't mean we were smokers, it was harmless and we haven't had one since (it is very important not to allow yourself any justification). Its the first step that is the hardest, and that step you take silently, in your head.

The physical addiction can be a little crappy. When I was smoking a pack a day, I definately felt poorly for two or three days. Easily irritated, a little woozy. Just remember that it will pass.

After that, its all in your head. If you become outraged at your own lack of self-control, that can help (allow yourself to have a backbone to stand up to yourself (wierd, isn't it)).

I would suggest trying to slow down a little first. I don't really agree with nictoine products, they just seem like crutches and gimmicks. People don't need help, they need self-control. Don't give in to your cravings. Who owns you, the nicotine?

Good luck.

I'm in the same positionas you in that I've never smoked and never EVER intend to. But I do however understand (at least partly) why it's so hard to quit. It's called an addiction. I won't patronise you more by explaining what one is but that's it! If you're addicted you may well want to stop but just can't because you just "need" a cigarette.

I also beleive that a part of it is just the habit of holding something and moving it to and from your mouth. This can be compared to the many of us who regularly visit neowin for no good reason, but just because of the habit of clicking the link from the favoutite menu

Read this:

Allen Carr - The Easy Way To Stop Smoking

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=books&n=507846

and here for some reviews:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/076...5901085-5398465

I've heard nothing but great opinions on it, especially from my 40-a-day, smoking for 16 years mate who's now 5 months cold Turkey and showing no signs of faltering. Apparently the book suggests you smoke like a mad man while you read it... but by the end you'll be absolutely turned against them.

well a friend of mine hates black licorice, so everytime he had an urge to smoke he would just suck on that. Then the black licorice taste or whatever you hate is associated with smoking.

Here is a site in China dedicated to refraining from smoking. Today my area has been getting blackout, so I could not translate them into English for you.

You might ask some Chinese members of NeoWin to explain this for you.

Nicotine patches will do the job...but you gotta have strong willingness to help stop smoking for good. If you don't have strong willingness then it's useless.

I smoked 2 - 2 1/2 packs a day for probably close to 10 years. :pinch: And I was the same way, I would want to quit, but

without even realizing it, found myself smoking.

Here is what I did to quit, coming up on 9 years ago now:

1) Took a 2 week vacation from work.

2) On the last day before vacation, did not stop to buy any more, that way when I ran out, there were no more to smoke.

3) For the entire vacation, stayed away from anyone smoking.

4) Anytime I would get a craving, I would try to do something to take my mind off of it. (Nap, eat, movie, etc. Something non stressful)

5) After the vacation, I would try to stay away from anyone smoking. (Especially those "friends" who try to get you to start again.)

6) Stopped drinking any kind of liquor for the longest time. (I always smoked more when I was drinking.) (And actually, I gave up drinking later on too.)

Now, this may not work for everyone, and let me tell you, it wasn't easy. There were many times I wanted to

punch people, yell at them, etc all for the littlest things. And I had pretty bad cravings for months.

(To this day, I still ocasionally get a craving, if I am in a club or somewhere alot of people are smoking, and the smoke is in the air. And this is 9 YEARS later!)

But I know, giving in, even for just one, could start the whole thing over again. And now, I am at the point where the quitting was harder and more painful,

than the desire to start again.

Just don't give up. Surround yourself with people who will help you quit, not help you start again.

Good Luck! :D
