VidER
Hi All.. As soon as Google announced their free 1 GB email accounts.. other companies followed them.. Yahoo oferred 100 Mbs, Tripod 1 GB, and now I found http://www.aventuremail.com/ which offers 2 GB emails!! What is the catch? How do they offer such big accounts for each user? did hosting become that cheap? or there is a certain filing and compression mechanism that allows them to offer this space? Why don't they offer free hosting with as huge spaces? VidER

cracell~
ok this is virtual space not actually, msot suers don't have more then about 100mb of emails after a year or so so for that 1gb 10 people are actually using it, but the user ahs the ability to go up to 1gb, doesn't mean that they have it reserved for them also memory is cheap, basically u can get a gb for a buck, and in bulk a lot cheaper, my guess it between everything google will only be playing about 5 bucks per a user, and make more on ads

matt74441
[RANT] I don't know about the rest of you, but I think the whole 1GB + email services are getting out of control, especially with GMail. Recently the mods, especially Radish took a stand on this issue and banned all sales of it in NeoBay, which I thought was a good move on their part. I personally think it is pathetic to be paying money for a free service that will only be in beta for not much longer, but again thats just me. I apparently don't have enough money to be throwing away like that. Lets look at how 1GB + email services work. They give you 1GB of free e-mail storage, and in some cases the ability to store large files and send them around. Sounds like a good deal and you'd be stupid not to get it. As "payment" to send, receive and store how many thousands of e-mails, they are going to SPAM the @#$! right out of you. And there will be no way to block it; there will be no filters on what goes to your inbox. I have three e-mail accounts that I use on a regular basis, one at hotmail, one at my domain, and one here at Neowin. Combined thats 30MB of e-mail space. Now I get quite a bit of use out of my e-mail accounts, about 20 actual emails a day for the domain and hotmail one, and only 1 or 2 from my Neowin account (I really only got it to support the site). Do you know how many emails I have stored in those accounts at any given time? Zero. I read an e-mail and delete it, or download it if its important. I have about 2MB of downloaded e-mails for the last year. I'm afraid I've lost quite a bit of respect for Google for starting up all this crap. Not that I highly respected them to begin with, but you understand what I mean. So if you really want 1GB + of free e-mail, go crazy, but you get what you pay for. Thank you for letting me get this out. [/RANT]
