Microsoft Piracy

Recommended Posts

Just wondering how far Microsoft goes (legal wise), if a computer shop was using and selling computers with pirated versions of Windows and Office XP. I just reported a computer shop that I worked at for a day to the Microsoft Piracy hotline, the owner had me install XP Pro with a generated key and a cheap CD-R. He was also bragging about how much pirated Microsoft software he installs in his shop. He also stiffed me out of my paycheck for the day I worked there  , as soon as I got off the phone with him, I called the MS piracy hotline. Please tell me they'll go at him with everything they have. The computer shop is in the USA by the way.

well, i dunno. iver never expeirenced stuff like this. but owing a computer shop and pirating software (which he maybe uses to install and sells it to customers) is really bad.

Oh, wtf. You actually wasted your time reporting them?

What did that computer shop ever do to you? Did you lose any profit because the copies were not legit?

In other words, why should you even care? You should have just installed XP on that computer and deal with it. It's a simple concept. ;)

He cares because it's illegal, and doesn't like to see people getting ripped off. It's a simple concept

Radish?

also the keygen he was using was the well known keygen for the original Corp ver., so anybody who trys to install SP2 of XP will get locked out of their computer.

edit: seen tests; when you restart the computer after installing SP2, you are asked to activate windows

I think you did the right thing, selling praited software to customers who might not even know the difference (until one day their computer stops working) isn't cool.

Very good! You did a very good job at reducing the chances of confused new or little-knowledged computer users. What if they try to install SP2 or contact microsoft regarding support. They might find out that they bought pirated software!

I believe with all the profits, Microsoft have, they will go a long way to stop the business you worked in at all costs. (Y)

*note to self*

Start downloading and distributing warez copies of OS-X whenever possible, for free.

What goes around comes around, right?

@trashpickinman; seriously though, you did the right thing. Good job. (Y)

Yeah, i agree... good job reporting him.

I mean, it's one thing using pirated software, and knowing you can get in trouble, but selling it to people is even worse. Many people are getting in trouble for this

And for all you using pirated software who don't know the penilty, it's 4 TIMES the RETAIL PRICE!!! Meaning, MSRP (Microsoft Price) X 4!

Scared ya? Heha! ;)

Radish?

People aren't getting ripped off, the guy is saving them money.

Why didn't you get paid for your day of work? Did the guy not want to hire you? Only one day of work sounds a bit suspicious, sounds like you were there on a trial basis.

Was this your way of getting "revenge"? Well probably now you've ruined this guy's life because they're going to throw the book at him. Think about that for a while. Hope you had fun, loser.

That shop is now 0wn3:yes:s:

Radish?

Under his control, the consulting company was, after Fred's departure, sued by Microsoft for $25,000 US because of Fred's pirating of MS-DOS 5.0. Microsoft found out that he was distributing machines from the company with pirated installs on them, and sued the company.

And won. This is here in Illinois.

toadeater is a textbook example of a warez kiddie. Using warez is a little different than making a profit off it. He was selling systems to people thinking they were getting something they weren't, and could potentially get in trouble for using themselves. AND probably charging them the price of the legit version.

That is WRONG. I hope they do throw the book at him and that his life is ruined, because he is a criminal and was taking advantage of people.

And you ever think he may have quit after the first day when he saw the type of business it was? I think someone is confused over who the loser in this situation is.

That's my thought too. I wonder would he have cared if the owner paid him without all the problems he is facing.

Only until they get locked out of their machines, then they have to pay for a copy anyway...

I worked there for one day because a lot of the things he was saying including talking about the software piracy thing really threw up red flags saying this guy was a pretty crooked guy. I was hired, I even filled out the W-4. But the final HUGE red flag, was when he said, Sometimes I might ask you to hold off on cashing your paycheck for a few days until I get the money. Everytime I repeated that phrase to anybody I knew, they looked like they were in shock, everybody told me to stay away. Even my parents told me just to quit, and my parents REALLY wanted me to have a computer job. I wouldnt exactly call it "revenge" but when i called him and asked for my paycheck for the hours I did work, he wouldnt give it to me. Thats a clear violation of the law, not giving me my paycheck for working and for pirating software. Thats why I called Microsoft and thats why I'm filling out a "Claim for Wages" with the state of Kansas.
