I've seen this done on other forums and it seems to help stop hit and run members. A member needs to have say 20 posts before they are able to post new topics and helps stop people who just advertise their sites and then bugger off. Examples:

https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=177709

Face it, they ain't coming back.

Yeah, exactly. Alot of members sign up first to ask a question.

true but how will you control it. i dont think there is a feature at the moment to do that. you could of course use the upgrade feature to do so.

i know mods will close it as soon as they see it but that wont stop them posting their site.

I still don't know all the rules. I've been told that there are rules that don't seem to exist at all, like no attachments larger than 1024x768 and stuff like that, so it is kind of confusing. Thankfully the moderators don't seem heavy handed at all, and that is refreshing to see. I like this place so far. Better than most I've visited and I like that the messages are so easy to read on the IPB Skinset 1.2 theme that I have chosen. And most of the time, this board is very fast. I like that too.

Well theres certainly a division here over this. I just thought that something like this would stop spammers.

I don't know if the current IPB has this feature, but I know that a 3 year old version of Ikonboard has it.

well, if members just followed the rules, we wouldnt need to have this thread :p

there would be less mods and s.mods as well

doesnt that just increase the workload of our mods.. considering the job they already have to do...

i realise it'd be 5 posts.. but alot of people join this forum....

we could do it in a more automated way. like afc mentioned to me earlier.

make a group that newbies join into... say the 'NW Newbie Group' with the post new thread ability disabled.

once they get say 5 posts (replies), they would get promoted to the Members group, which would have the post thread ability.

it's not that hard really.

sounds like a good idea. make sure it includes no PM as well.

Well think about how many new members sign up on a daily basis, and how many of them actually post in the forums. All it would take from the mods is a quick look and that would be it. But I don' think a newbie subforum would be the best thing for new members.
