File Encrypting & .zip extractor buit-in

Recommended Posts

Is is possible to use XP's built-in file encrypting tool when I'm running XP on FAT32? If so, how?

Can XP compress the file to .zip using its built-in tools? If so, how?

  • You can only encrypt files and folders on NTFS file system volumes.
  • Files or folders that are compressed cannot also be encrypted. If you encrypt a compressed file or folder, that file or folder will be uncompressed.

The encrypter built into windows cant be amazing... i HIGHLY recommend PGP freeware http://www.pgp.com/products/freeware/default.asp for encryption, you can use it for e-mail, newsgroups, etc.

Oh, and about the zip thing - the windows built in one is terrible, just go get WinRAR (although it has trouble integrating properly with windows XP, it will soon be fixed! Whatever you do dont use winzip ... what a waste of money that thing is (if you're into purchasing, that is :o )!

I totally recommend to use Bestcrypt for encrypting. More information http://jetico.sci.fi

check plugins as well.

Did you know that, still, if some files are encrypted by windows own tool, filenames are still readable? Yes they are.

Best solution is to encrypt all files to Bestcrypt container and then encrypt the container with windows encrypter. DOuble safe!
