todd
I prefer desktops.. They offer more bang for the buck (laptops are quite expensive for "top of the line" as you say) .. you could easily get a kickass desktop for less than a top of the line laptop. If you dont travel much either, theres not really a point in needing a laptop. Gaming is usually better on desktops too.
mistical
I'd go with getting the laptop, you have your computer right now you could use for anything as needed, I'd get a laptop. But as I've read other posts, it really matters what you want to do with it, I understand everyone has asked these questions and you have answered them. Soo just saying I'd go with a laptop if I had the choice again to get another laptop... I'd actually go with a powerbook by apple :D
Neilzsche
I'd say get a laptop, they are the trend these days. If you need mobility go for one with longer battery, otherwise get a desktop replacement and you can enjoy the ebnefits of good performance with some mobility too. That's what I did. ahfunaki
I have both, but if I had to chose I'd get a desktop. More powerful, easy to upgrade, can do alot more stuff with them...
Hum
I have both, but if I had to chose I'd get a desktop. More powerful, easy to upgrade, can do alot more stuff with them... Lucky you to have both. I think a laptop can be more fun in many ways, tho it would need to be a more expensive one. You can take a laptop many places, including outdoors on a nice day.
Bushrat
I personally would get a laptop and a desktop AND a big arse server with 1TB storage :) Oh and of course a gigabit network setup
rstroud
I too, have a desktop and laptop. I use my laptop to surf the internet and to write papers. It's handy because I can carry it around. I use my desktop for gaming and when I feel like I need a bit more speed. However, why get a server when you can get a server farm! Think of how cool it would be to have fifty servers..now that would be cool...
forster
<This may have been better posted in Hardware Hangout, if so sorry>I am looking to upgrade my computer and I am wondering which would be better a laptop (top of the line (not apple)), or a custom built desktop? What are your thoughts? Pros and Cons .... thanks! Laptop - I really miss mine. It wasnt too great for gaming, but the ability to browse the net and stuff from a comfy sofa was worth it. Wannes
depends for your use. if you want it to by really easy to cary around you wont have much use with a laptop but if you want a strong and fast system for a low cost build a desktop yourself. gawdflesh
Powerbook  Can you not read? He said he didn't want an Apple. Back on topic, I'd weigh what you actually use your home system for. If you're not a hardcore gamer, then you could probably be quite happy with a mid-range or top of the line laptop, especially a centrino one.
