Please help: Lan party setup

Recommended Posts

Its my birthday next week and me and my friends are gana have a lan party.

I have a cable connectoin but my router doesnt have enough slots.

I was going to buy a "Hub" to slap onto my connection and plug theres into it.

so it would go in the descending order of

Are 3 computers ----> Internet hub ----> Router ------> Internet

How slow would this be?

I dont think it would slow it down to much though i might be wrong.

And is it possible to go 3 comptuers ---> Router ----> Router ------> Internet

Please help!

Well, if you plan on doing this more often, you don't want to get a hub. A hub is really stupid in terms of networking, which is why it's so much cheaper. You could go Computers -> router -> router -> internet, however I strongly suggest against it since it adds an extra headache. The best course of action for any LAN party (I don't care what others say), is to buy a switch. It doesn't have to be big, I'd say look for a 5 or 8 port switch. It'll make your ping on the LAN a lot smaller, and speed up the packets passing through.

The first setup should be possible.

I don't know how slow it would be and I'd use a switch instead of a hub, though I think it doesn't matter if only 3 PCs are connected.

setup 1 with the hub would give each computer a total bandwith of 33.33~ mb each. (you wont notice it in games, only in file transfers)

setup 2 with the router will keep the 100mb each behind the internet (internal network) (you wont notice it in games, only in file transfers)
