andrew22
Hey all, I just wanted to find out if any of you have information on the company that hosts google and how many boxes does it take to host it. I know google is a big search enginge, but I am intrested in the magnitude needed to host such a large company.

[jon]
yea,has google ever been down due to bandwith? Seeing as its own srvers, they have no bandwidth limitation - the only limiting factor is their connection speed which i presume is within the several hundred mbit / more likely gbit range.... rezza Veteran Posted June 15, 2004 Veteran Share Posted June 15, 2004 There is an interesting read about google's server technology here, they don't have a "host" per se, think in the range of hundreds of thousands of servers in various co-lo sites, and when individual servers break down its not even worth the trouble of swapping them out... andrew22
thx rezza, very cool article, but you got any clue as to how many servers host an image of google or a part of it. I.E., does it take 100 servers, 1000, more?

tristan.oneil
You know what I heard is they use really cheap machines, similar to a machine like emachine, but they use them in huge quantities, in a farm, and when one craps out they can just replace it for cheap. incubusdaemon
They don't even have cases on the machines, just mobos, ram, and HDDs. They buy the cheapest possible, and when one breaks they just put a new one in and keep going (the spider will get back to that part of the web anyway)
