xxdesmus
if i had to guess i'd say the likelihood of google offering pop3 access for free is unlikely. they may offer it as a paid service or ad-supported, but think about it...they have ads on the right side of the pane for a reason...to generate money to support gmail, if you are using pop3 you're never going to see those ads and therefore they aren't making the same advertising profits. just my thoughts. +dave164 Subscriber¹ Posted June 16, 2004 Subscriber¹ Share Posted June 16, 2004 dunno they are still working on it, alot to do yet (see below) You might be interested to hear that we are working on many upcomingfeatures, including the following: - Automatic forwarding of your email to another account - Plain HTML version of Gmail - Import/export Contacts And if possible everyone should email gmail saying they should have folders instead of labels... Just a thought David ;)
+dave164 Subscriber¹ Posted June 16, 2004 Subscriber¹ Share Posted June 16, 2004 something interesting u might like to know to settle the arguements earlier... How do I add an attachment? After clicking on 'Compose Mail,' just click on 'Attach a file.' At that point, you'll be able to browse the files on your computer and add your attachment. Once you've selected a file to attach, click the 'Open' button and that file will be added to your message. You will see the path of your file listed just below the subject field. If you'd like to get rid of the attachment, just click 'remove.' With Gmail, you can send and receive messages with a maximum total size of 10MB. Does Gmail support automatic forwarding and POP3 access? Not at the moment, but Google believes in helping people access information whenever and however they want to do so. In the future you will be able to access Gmail messages from non-Gmail accounts for free or at a nominal fee.
lardiop Veteran Posted June 16, 2004 Veteran Share Posted June 16, 2004 The Import/Export of the GMail contact list would be awesome. Official POP3 Access wouldn't hurt either... :shifty:
Danrarbc
Whats wrong with labels though? They seem to work just like folders for me. You can manually apply labels (ie 'move' it to a folder), and you can set up filters like I have. I have a Neowin label, one for church, and one for IGN. and you have to go into the email to label it. Have you tried selecting the checkbox next to a message and they using the 'Apply label' drop down on the right side?
+dave164 Subscriber¹ Posted June 16, 2004 Subscriber¹ Share Posted June 16, 2004 I dislike not having it as an option in the drop down menu on the inbox, really awkward going into the email to put it into the label.... But i s'pose i can give it another shot... :woot: p.s. i updated thread above... bout pop3 and attachment size..

+dave164 Subscriber¹ Posted June 16, 2004 Subscriber¹ Share Posted June 16, 2004 Just relised that now :p lol silly me, ok i have 3 labels, neowin, google invites and work, all set up with filters that work Cheers, David
hds
I dislike not having it as an option in the drop down menu on the inbox, really awkward going into the email to put it into the label.... [instructions for labeling from index deleted since it's been cleared up already...] And you can set up filters to label messages automatically. If you don't want the messages to appear in your inbox (like filing into folders) just select the "bypass inbox" filter option. Labels are like folders, only you can apply multiple labels to a single message. :D

[ timko ]
Is it just me or is anyone else seeing Gmail prompt your for a word confirmation (ie "Type what you see in this pic below") upon login? Yes I realise I can tick the "Don't ask me for my password for two weeks" but I access gmail on publicly accessible computers as well :)

No, I'm not seeing that. They might be testing that system for the launch, and they felt the login was a good place to try it.

[ timko ]
How do I get invites? Assuming you've already got a gmail acc then you just wait until one day you login and you should see in biggish letters that Google have given you invites to hand out. There's nothing you can do to speed a long this process of them giving it to you. It appears they do it randomly as some users have reported of getting invites a few days after joining whilst others waited up to a week.

memNOC
anyone else having problems recieving mass forwarded mails in HTML format? do i have to enable HTML support or something? take a look: all i get is these attachments called 'noname' and when i click on either one, i get a popup saying 'HTTP 500 Server Error'.. however, when i click on 'More options' and then on 'Show original', i get the whole e-mail output in code.. like i have to read the HTML to decipher what it says, or copy it all and make an .htm file to view it.. point is, the message is there, it just doesn't show right as an attachment.. is this a known bug and are they working on it? cuz it's pretty serious, IMO.. other than that, no complaints.. great service.. Indeed. well i have seen people having problems with sending some files (not sure what type) with a size of around 8mb and it failing...It's most likely a connection problem...i like the way everything is nice and javascripty! feels like a nice exploit is near!Just curious, what kind of javascripty stuff does it have?

Laughing-Man
IMO: 1. Needs an option that allows you to turn off the feature that automatically adds email addresses to the contact list. 2. Needs a button or link that allows you to delete checked mail instead of the option in the drop down menu. 3. Needs a [Empty Trash] button next to the trash folder link. 4. An autopreview of picture attachments at the bottom of emails like Thunderbird does would be nice. 5. Everything else is awesome. Google Minimalism = good, Hotmail and YahooMail = Too Picture Bl0ated.
