What is the meaing of life?

That is an easy answer if you're a Christian; to serve God, spread His Word and multiply (<- who can argue with that?).

Even that might not be true. The Bible has many, many interpretations, and yours is just one of them. Many people would say something completely different. And, if you do not accept the Bible as the true word of an ultimate God, then you have even more complications.

The meaning/goal of life is to discover God/Creator/Higher Power for yourself. Listening to what you've been told by your religious leader(s) is alright, but to find out God exists not based on anything you've been told is the meaning. Almost every religion deals with this idea.

At least that's what I've told myself is the meaning.

(and just to make things clear I'm not a religious fanatic, as a matter of fact I'm not very religious at all. This just seems to make the most sense. :/ )

I wasn't trying to turn this into a religious debate and it's obvious that this is my interpretation. Personally, I don't think you can pin point a specific answer even if you are religious because everyone is going to have a different experience.

So, what are some ideas?

The meaning of life is to be tortured and stumbled with endless of obstacles and miserables.. and yet still manage to make something useful to this society.

Life always challenges you, and for those that love to be challenged will enjoy happiness.

Religion has NOTHING to do with life itself. It is essential for those that need it, but it is also optional for those that have do TAKE ACTION and fight.

Praying and then sitting dock will not do you much good.

For that very reason, this is why I despise religion I need more of an answer than that, I cannot put my faith into something with no more of an explanation, than "because thats how it is".

you have to remember, all religion is nothing more then faith.

so's science. (well, for the most part) We can't prove gravity we can only see it and theorize about it.

What if there is no higher power? If that is true, then you must define a personal meaning of life for yourself, that does not have to do with a higher power. In my experience, many people turn to a "higher power" because it is easier than defining a goal for themselves, and so I would encourage people to think, regardless of whether there is a higher power, about what they believe that the meaning of their life is. For example, many people believe that helping others is the true meaning of life (a goal of life, so to speak), but this is just one possibility. You could even think "if I discovered a higher power, what would he/she/it/they want me to do?" This then could be your meaning of life, and might even impress a higher power more that you have devised what you believe is the meaning of life than if you simply sought them out and asked them the question. However, it might not. It is fruitless to spend your life endlessly thinking, though. Do some introspective thinking, and devise what you think, from your experience and from what you believe is right, what the true meaning of life for you is.

Science is based on observation. Religion is based on faith. That is the main difference between the two. If one comes up with a scientific theory that cannot be disproven based on observation, then it is no longer science and has passed into the realm of metaphysics, which is based on faith.

I totally agree; while I believe the goal is to find out the Higher Power exists, one cannot do that until they have reached a much higher level of humanity.

My idea really ties into Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism but I can?t say I completely understand any of them. That?s just my idea.

And in the end...I always wonder how the universe was created, why everything works so well together, and also where I'm going when I leave this earth. Believing in God isn't a sign of weakness or lack of direction, quite the contrary. Our goal in life is to be close with God, serve Him, ect.

rstroud, I respect your input, but I do not agree, we should not be here to serve anyone, I believe we are put here to learn, and ask important questions such as this very open ended question.

Also, I was wondering if someone could help me understand this, It is a little above my level of thinking, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%F6del%27s_i...eteness_theorem

What is the meaning of life? Well I'd say just about everyone could have a different answer to this question.

I myself don't really care of the meaning of life, as long as I'm happy and enjoying myself.

What if you do find the real meaning of life? What if you don't like it, and you wasted all that time trying to find it.

Plus, who Is the one that made the "Meaning of life" up. Some moron off the street, or god? or some greek dude? lol..

blah, I'm done now

Well, it's nothing special. Try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations. (Monty Python's 'The Meaning of life', 1983)

hehe..just had to do it

You're referring to death, only in a sketchy manner. What if I build this whole thing up only to discover there is no Higher Power? Well, I suppose it would be fine by me since I'm dead to all brain activity.

I myself don't really care of the meaning of life, as long as I'm happy and enjoying myself.

Look, it's recursive. I whole-heartedly believe the meaning of life is happiness, peace, feeling as you have a purpose in life, being treated with respect... keyword: happiness.

Everyone has got it wrong. The answer is so simple that you all will slap your heads in amazement.

The meaning of life is.

life ( P ) Pronunciation Key (lf)

n. pl. lives (lvz)

1.

a. The property or quality that distinguishes living organisms from dead organisms and inanimate matter, manifested in functions such as metabolism, growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli or adaptation to the environment originating from within the organism.

b. The characteristic state or condition of a living organism.

It is just that simple. People waste said life looking for what is right infront of them all of the time.
